Men with young children

I mean middle aged men who have children aged around 10 or younger, it’s all I see on online dating, mine are much older was I too young when I had mine? I’m 51, I just don’t know if I can date a man my age with young kids, I’ve done all that, does anyone here date men in their 50’s with young kids when their kids are grown up?

I think those men in their 50s with young children are probably on their second divorce but don't make that known - for obvious reasons.

Yes your probably right, I was chatting to someone today and we were asking about our children, he has 4 girls and a boy ages between 10-17.

All the trauma there of teenage years and poss University plus any ex wives. Why would you put yourself through that. You would always be the runner up

Yes I was honest and told him it wasn’t for me, 4 girls coming up to being teenagers no thanks 😂 I was just wondering if it’s usual to have young kids in your 50’s maybe I was to young having mine.

Well, it depends, like anything, is the answer to that! I am 47. Some of my similarly aged friends have children in their teens and twenties and some have toddlers.

I guess that, on average, the man in a couple is older than the woman so is older when they have kids, which may be why you're finding this.

My brother will be 50 this year and has one age 2 and one under age 1.
First & only marriage & kids but they struggled for over a decade with infertility.
These two are miracle babies.

I was 36 and 38 when I had my children. My husband is 10 years older and was 49 when we had the younger one, so at 50 he had a one year old and a three year old.

In your place I wouldn’t be looking to date a man with young children though.

SheilaFentiman · 20/10/2026 14:07

You weren’t too young to have your kids.

It is perfectly fine not to want to date a man with young kids, though.

Hmm, possibly.

But also a combo of meeting later in life and fertility issues. Family member who is a couple of years older than me, got married about 5 years after me (to a woman maybe 5 years younger than him). Tried for a while, then needed IVF, meaning he was early-mid 40s before having his first, then had a couple of years of gap before having a second.

He’s happily married 🙂 but would otherwise fall into OP’s demographic of 50 something men with under 10s.

I'd got my daughter to the ripe old age of 18 on my own and was feeling I could start to sit back a bit, then met my now partner who had a 10 year old DD. It's been absolutely fine but I wasn't expecting to have to go through it all again!

This!

I'm not single but I would run a mile from a man with young kids. If he is a good dad, then you will always be of less importance and dates will be at soft play areas. My youngest has just hit teens and life has opened so many doors for me again. It's an exciting positive time. No way would I drag myself back there unless I really fell head over heels for someone.

Yes I think it is. Most of the Dad’s in my child’s reception class are 40 ish so yes they’ll be in their 50s with kids in their early teens.

Scarlet171 · 20/10/2026 14:35

My DH was 50 when our DS was born. First and only DC for either of us and we’d been together for 20+ years.

DS is in year 1 and there are quite a few fathers who are 50+ with children in his class.

I know a few had fertility issues and resorted to IVF so that might explain why some waited so long. We were just selfish and wanted 20 years doing our own stuff before having DS!

Livingthebestlife · 20/10/2026 14:36

He would have had his children in his mid 30s and early 40s, nothing wrong or strange with that, lots of people do this.

JohnofWessex · 20/10/2026 14:37

I was 39 when I had my first and 48 for the last

But when I took them to Canoe Club there were a lot of dads who were entitled to call me 'Sonny' and I dont think that some of the mums were in the first flush of youth either

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 20/10/2026 14:39

It seems to be many more that do than you’d think. Many due to leaving it later in life to have children just as women do. I would not date anyone with children who weren’t adults. Different life stages.
