Valspar or Dulux paint-which is better?

I want to decorate my bedroom and I usually use Dulux paint, but I prefer a colour in the valspar range. I don’t want to have to do 5 coats ( I won’t buy cheap paint again after doing that before and it was a nightmare!) Any reviews or comparisons please? Smile Also, is it me or have Dulux cut their colour range down hugely?

We did a room in a beautiful colour of Valspar. It did not wear well and looked shabby quite quickly. Such a shame as I loved the colour.

Whatever you choose get the trade paint rather than the diy one.

Got put off valspar after the fish smell issue they had a few years ago. I had a friend whose hous had been painted and it stunk even after it was redone.

Same. And this wasn't first time (shame on me) but some people love them so thought it was us the first time.

Dulux have olne odd too. We moved to crown and we are really happy with them. They mix colours as well

Dulux still offer a colour matching service if you are near a decorator centre: https://www.duluxdecoratorcentre.co.uk/colour-mixing

That is a shame-we’ve decided on going for a blue shade, but it’s like Dulux have gone to three blues, one of which looked grey, one was so dark it would be like sleeping in a coffin and the other was too bright. 😬

Do you know if they would colour match a valspar colour?

Our whole house, apart from the en-suite, is in Valspar. We used the premium wipeable paint, and 4 yrs on there’s not a mark or a chip on it. The en-suite, however, needs redoing. That was done in Dulux bathroom paint which hasn’t worn at all well.

Ilovemyshed · 18/10/2026 20:02

Valspar is good paint. The dead flat matt V&co is particularly good and washable.

Valspar also scan and match but I prefer the shade cards mixed to a formula as its identical across multiple tins.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 18/10/2026 20:04

We used various Dulux paints last year. The bathroom paint and the trade paint (Diamond matt) have worn fine but the normal Dulux marked terribly within weeks (it was a bedroom).

Our whole house is also valspar. We got the extra tough one you can scrub due to pets and kids. Had absolutely no problems with it. We just got the house redecorated in the same colours using the same brand.

Yes they would, I’ve done this.

Daftapath · 19/10/2026 02:28

We did our bedroom in Valspar few years ago and still looks good. Recently used the left over paint for main entrance hall and small downstairs loo and that is also still good, 18mths on.

Can’t comment re the two brands, but if you’ve found a colour you like then you should be able to find out it’s RAL code. Once you have a RAL code, you should be able to get that made up by any paint brand you prefer. I always use Little Greene paint, have got them to mix various finishes to specific RAL codes. Am only giving them as an example, pretty much any brand should be able to do this.

Colour match via Decorating Centre Online. They do trade based paints, are super helpful about quality. We have had dulux, Leyland and Johnston through them and been pleased every time.

My decorator uses brewers and only crown or dulux trade.

Valspar wasn't worth it the one time we used it.
