This might be long but I'm sticking to the facts.
2021 Infection in jaw bone, thought it was getting better. It was not and the Infection travelled up through my sinuses and into my left lobe of brain.
24 hours to live, family summoned, all that high drama and heartbreak. Has craniotomy, extensive jaw bone surgery and about 15 teeth out. I am grateful to be alive, even with a serious facial disfigurement. Sepsis very neatly killed me.
Spent 5 months in hospital due to that.
Went home, recovered and put weight back on and all seemed reasonably well until spring 2024.
2025 went to doctors after feeling dreadful and nauseous for a few weeks. Sent for tests, found to have E-Coli and C-Diff.
All treated in time but I then began to have repeated urine/kidney infections.
E-Coli is known to seriously affect kidney function and it seems they were affected. I was on permanent antibiotics but they've had go be changed periodically. I have had kidney scans fairly recently and apparently they're recovering and function is better.
It's the next bit that's worrying me, during E-Coli I dropped to 5 stone 11lb (from 13 stone before sepsis in brain) but have put on nearly 2 stone to this day and I feel reasonably ok.
Just recently
At night times I become covered in hives. Absolutely awful relentless irritation, which when particularly bad I will treat with antihistamines and/or creams.
I am very sleepy more or less all the time, I can easily fall asleep just after the school run. I've never done this before.
I seem to struggle getting rid of colds and have developed an extremely concerning sleep/waking apnea. I'm finding myself snoring but awake at my laptop, and my lovely DH has had to move to the spare room so he can have a decent night's sleep.
I don't smoke or drink or take drugs and im prescribed
Lamotrigine 150mg (Epilepsy dx when I was 22 im 44 now)
Citalopram 20mg (mild depression)
Zinc
Magnesium

Thiamine
Iron tablets
Prophylactic antibiotics
Sodium
All prescribed by my doctor.
Any ideas to help me or explain please?
I'm fed up of being a poorly mum.
Thankyou, i love Mumsnet

The symptoms point to poor lung function so I would ask for a referral to pulmonology.

except for this At night times I become covered in hives
so what happens in the evening? there must be something you are exposed to that is causing these?

I used to be randomly covered in hives with no obvious trigger (and they usually appeared later in the day)- it was high thyroid antibodies.

Sounds like you need to be reviewed by a GP, who may feel further referral is needed. You have had several significant illness over the last 5 years.

I would send an online request to your GP with your OP for info. Don’t let the surgery fob you off with a nurse practitioner, PA, etc. They have a place, but your history and symptoms aren’t usual. Hope you get to the bottom of this.

The night time hives happened to a relative of mine - it turned out that in her 30s she suddenly developed allergies to chemicals in her environment. She now can't sleep in sheets that have been laundered with scented detergent (amongst other things). I don't have a scientific explanation but I wonder if your body's immune system is shot by everything you have been through and now you have developed new allergies. It might be worth checking that out? I'm so sorry this has all happened to you - it sounds horrendous. xx
