I mean I am glad he likes it, no bad things, team sport, fresh air, friendship and he’s bloody good at it. standing around at 9 am every Sunday though 🥱

I'm with you. My daughter plays rugby and because there are fewer girls teams we have to travel miles away. Takes up most of Sunday! Much prefer cricket in the summer- round the corner and only happens when it's not raining!

Ds is mid 20s now and living his own life. I miss the rugby mornings now. But back the. I would have agreed they are tough.

I loved it! Sundays don’t feel the same anymore - now he’s at college he plays Wednesdays and I work full time so don’t get to see him 🙁

Yes this one is a good half hour away as well! So can’t even come home in between!

I have to take my younger child and so we’re hanging around for an hour. Sigh.

They are very dedicated, I just wish they’d break for school holidays!

Absolutely agree my sons now 24 still plays and has done since he was 6.
when he stopped needing us to ferry him around I didn’t know what to do with myself.
Enjoy it, time goes too quickly.

Fellow Rugby mum here...my girl just went into U16s so 12pm starts which is a lot more relaxed!

outhereover · 18/10/2026 09:04

I’m hoping dd will play as well as the challenge is keeping her entertained while ds plays at the moment

I was delighted when neither DS took any interest in sport, despite DS1 being quite good at it.

But then they played chess. Tournaments once a week and DS1 went on to play for the county. At least we were warm while hanging around.

At our club that was one of the main girls' recruitment tools, the coach wandering round on a Sunday morning and finding the bored sisters!!!

RandomMess · 18/10/2026 09:12

I think I did peak spending Mother’s Day in near freezing temperatures after driving an hours in hail entertaining a 4 and 6 year old. Eldest DD plays for an international deaf team now though so it was worth it.

Doesn’t help that I loath watching sport and had 4 very sporty DC.

Not rugby but football at 1 today, right in the middle of lunchtime!

BugJuice · 18/10/2026 09:58

I have one who plays hockey on a Saturday and football on a Sunday, and one who plays hockey on a Saturday (at a different time to the other child) and rugby on a Sunday. I basically live at the side of a field 😁. I’ll be sad when it ends.

I ran our local kids rugby team for many years - yes it was hard work but very rewarding. Can I suggest you get involved with the club? It'll give you something to do while you're there ( particularly if it's raining you can be in the the clubhouse on match days making the hotdogs etc.). Can your younger child not play as well, as running around will keep them warmer than standing around feeling the sub-zero temperature of the ground working it's way through your shoes and up your legs

Weepingwillows12 · 18/10/2026 10:08

Me and DH alternate. I mostly quite enjoy it, especially when it's at the club rather than the overflow pitches (aka field with zero facilities in the middle of a housing estate) but despise it in the middle of winter. Cold and wet is the worst.

Weepingwillows12 · 18/10/2026 10:09

But I should add, my ds loves it so I will keep going.

therockingbird · 18/10/2026 10:13

I love it! I found a purpose and got myself involved rather than stand around. I’m now the team photographer and about to embark on a sports massage therapy course.. ☺️ the down side is I’ve spent thousands on camera equipment and now I'm overrun with requests to photograph other teams! Turns out I’m actually quite good.. which is a bonus. The boys love seeing all their action shots and I feel like I’m contributing to the team. I’ve also been tasked with organising the rugby tour this year purely because I’m a planner! I have a rare Sunday off this week and I’m missing it 🫣
