Currently getting this via a clinical psychologist (NHS). It's fascinating and unfortunately makes perfect sense to me.
Does anyone else want to have a chat about it? Did you find it useful? Did you have it privately or on NHS? How many sessions did you have? What was your diagnosis?
Some random bits that I have picked up that I found really interesting.
There is such a thing as 'schema chemistry' which dictates who you are attracted to. This made such perfect sense to me. I dated so many nice, kind men who I had no feelings for at all. Many were nice looking and some were even really rich. Nope still nothing. Dated one man who was very unemotional, cold, distant and made me feel very anxious. Hit me like a ton of bricks and I was high as a kite. Yip guess what kind of dad I had. Of course it didn't work out because the same as my dad contributed to my problems and needing therapy, this man did the same. However I am really enjoying being able to understand what the hell happened and why I became 'addicted' to this man and so very quickly.
The other thing I am finding fascinating is the whole idea of the fragmented self. So my understanding is healthy people have all their parts integrated. People who have suffered abusive/scary childhoods don't have their parts so well integrated and they flip between 'coping modes'. Then on the other end of the scale you have multiple personalities where the parts are completely fragmented and each part has it's own personality and memories. I don't think it's quite a straightforward as that but that is how I understand it.
I've had 5 hour long sessions so far. I like the therapist but spend each hour crying alot. I also feel exhausted for the 2 days after.
Anyone else?
