Advice for trying for a 2nd at 42

Hi! One for mums who have conceived over 40,

I’m looking for advice.

(I’m posting here for traffic. If not allowed, I’m
happy for the post to be moved to a more suitable thread.)

I turned 42 this summer. My first and only was born when I was 38. I just haven’t felt ready to go again until now.

I got pregnant the first time we tried last time - conceived without any assistance. It was an easy pregnancy. I don’t expect I’ll get pregnant as quickly, but we’ll see.

My plan is just to try unassisted as last time, but I’m second guessing myself.

My question is: what advice would you give to conceive?
Should I seek assistance immediately?

  • I’ve no eggs frozen
  • My AMH is at good levels - above average (though I know it’s not a fertility indicator)
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well I'd try and see what happened. You might get lucky. I'd probably give it three cycles and then get help if you can afford it.

Hi OP, we've moved this somewhere we believe is a better fit and you'll still get traffic.

Hope this helps

See what happens before you get assistance, imo. I know lots of women who had natural pregnancies at your age.

I had dcs at 38 and 42. For me I wasn't absolutely set on having dc2, I had the attitude that if it happened it would be nice, but if it didn't it wasn't meant to be. So I didn't seek any help with fertility. I knew I wouldn't have wanted to use donor eggs and the stats aren't very good for IVF age 40+ with own eggs, so it felt like a waste of money.

I got pg at age 41 and gave birth aged 42. It helped to not get fixated on it or monitor my cycle much, so I could be quite relaxed and just enjoy having sex without always thinking about ttc.

I think if you are really determined to have another child, statistically the odds are best if you use a donor egg. So you need to think about whether that's something you'd be happy to do. But I suspect if you were really determined you would have aimed for a tiny gap, as that tends to be common with older mums like us.

Before everyone was obsessed with counting cycles as an approach to getting pregnant, circa 40-44 the expectation of how long to get pregnant was a year.

We tried at 40, i honestly didn't think it would happen, first was conceived on the first try at 34, at 40 I was expecting we would try for a year and then stop, fell pregnant on the first try, and she's now 4, i know this isn't the case dor everyone.

I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and 41, will be 42, if all is well, when I give birth. It took 10 months of nothing to get to this point following a miscarriage last Autumn. We decided to just see what happened, I didn’t want IVF or any medical involvement. If it works, it works. We decided nature would let us know when it was time to stop trying.

That you all so much for you replies and your lovely encouragement- I really appreciate it.

As a few of you have suggested, I’m going to see how it goes. And if after a bloke if months there’s nothing, then I’ll see if we want to pursue any help. Finger’s x’ed.

Thanks to you all!

Sending you the best luck for this next bit @Owenspannas

I was 43 and got pg immediately. Like first time we had unprotected sex.

And had an uncomplicated pregnancy.

You just can’t tell what your body will do.
