I can’t shut my brain off!

I’m so tired. Didn’t sleep well last night. Tonight I cant relax. Can’t stop thinking of my day today. I don’t know what I have to do tomorrow because if it’s a bad day I will worry. So I won’t check until the morning. I’m a carer. I never know on a weekly basis where I will be sent. It’s exhausting. I love my job. I just wish it had more structure. My clients are all lovely but I am sent on a 20 min drive for a 15 min call to drive back 20 mins so I’m actually out of pocket. I just want to wind down. Even Stephen Dalton isn’t working.

I’m the same I worry constantly about everything. No rest. Surely it’s the same for everyone though isn’t it? Our brains don’t stop whirring.

Breath 4 seconds in. Hold breath for 4 seconds. Breath out 4 seconds.
Repeat 4 times

I don’t know how you do it but I a, grateful that you do and I’m sure your clients feel the same

Have you got any regulars? My mum is a lovely person, but I think the carers tend to bond with her partly because they have structure and a longer call so they have a chance to get to know each other in a way.

I think what you do is amazing. I hope you find a way to switch your brain off! Do you need something without a voice? So music for sleep or something

4 seconds yes. Helps. I might have to do that all night lol.
I think it’s the lack of control. I ran my own business so I appreciate staff morale. Seems care companies just think. Oh. Ok we can take this care user on. They get paid, Fine for them. Not for us doing the work. The system is not about providing care. It’s about making money sadly. Night for now. Thank you for your responses. Sleep well people.

Hopefully the proposed national care agency will come to fruition and be beneficial for carers as well as people needing care by cutting out the private sector operators in it to make money.

Like an NHS for care, I know the NHS has its issues but that model would be much better than what happens currently.

Proper employment contracts where people are paid for the hours they work including travel between visits, along with the associated benefits of a public sector job like job security, proper shift patterns and a defined benefit pension.

It won't even necessarily cost more because you don't have companies making a profit or multiple employers in the same area competing for staff and service users. Things like DBS checks and training could be standardised and managed centrally.

Well I slept really well! I have a lovely day, not too much driving thank goodness.

I worked for a care company in Kent and I saw the same clients at the same time every day, week after week. It worked well for both carers and clients. We got to know each other well and I saved a gentleman’s life because as much as he said he was fine, I knew him well enough to know he wasn’t and the ambulance arrived just in time to save him. With my present company I don’t see my clients regularly enough to know them that well. It’s frustrating. But I do my best.
