Is Mumsnet very slow with the amount of posting these days?

Ludijo · 17/10/2026 20:34

Just looked on active conversations, fourth one down was a thread that was started at 4.30 this evening, with no responses. It's 8.30 now, so that indicates that the site is very slow moving in terms of people actively posting, does it not?
Must be a very slow evening.
It surprised me that a thread posted four hours ago with no replies should be so high in active convos.
I always thought the site was more busy than this?

Chat used to be a very busy section of Mumsnet a few years ago. There are far fewer posts these days.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/10/2026 20:39

You’re right.

FallingfortheUnderdog · 17/10/2026 20:40

Active convos is a misleading description nowadays, there are regularly threads with no responses that were started hours previously

I don't know if MNHQ think no one will notice, fine to give threads a chance to get replies but I don't know why the title isn't changed

Then you might like threads about this subject:

Yes it's been dire lately. A handful of threads suck up all the activity, usually some rage bait, and the rest of the place moves at a snails pace.

It's quieter here in peak hours than it used to be at 3am a few years back.

Needacalminginfluence · 17/10/2026 20:47

I think it's such a shame that so many OP's get no or little response. Where as some threads get all the attention and all the posts. I do think this imbalance is getting more and more noticeable.

mamaof4losingmymind · 17/10/2026 20:54

The only threads that fill up now that I see are benefit bashing threads usually slagging of disabled people

whythehellnow · 17/10/2026 20:56

It has got very right wing on here in the last few years. I’m sure it didn’t use to be that way. Lots of complaining about the youth of today etc and benefit bashing. Maybe people find it via the cursed Facebook links which are always the really boring and yet salivatingly ‘controversial’ threads.

boxofshite · 17/10/2026 21:52

Do you remember when the had the “how many are viewing this thread” feature, the numbers were much smaller than I imagined

boxofshite · 17/10/2026 21:53

I think the active posters are quite old & grown with the site. MNs doesn’t seem to have attracted many new younger users.

Shloopie · 17/10/2026 21:55

It's definitely less active and it's gone more Netmums in tone (which used to be a big insult back in ye olden days of Mumsnet)

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 17/10/2026 21:55

So many threads on active seem to be those mn questionnaire thingies now. I suppose people are fed up of being laughed at, snapped at, told to grow up or ltb or seeing hth

boxofshite · 17/10/2026 22:00

@Shloopiewhat tone is Netmums?

BitOutOfPractice · 17/10/2026 22:03

I agree. And so many “promoted by mumsnet” threads in active threads as well. I think I may be bored of mn!

Peppermintini · 17/10/2026 22:13

MN went on a deactivating spree not too long ago. Years ago my husband and I moved to Asia for work. I use a free vpn for TV and browsing and so do a lot of my UK friends. When I was pregnant one of them introduced me to mn. Out of the blue I received an email from mn saying they noticed I had multiple accounts - I didn’t, I was just using a vpn lol but I didn’t bother responding. Friends had received the same messages. I hardly use it now, just randomly now and then when I’m back in the UK.

Quite old!? Grin Many mn users will be choking on their Pom Bears at that insult!

whyohwhyohwhyohwhyohwhyohwhy · 17/10/2026 22:21

It has got quite boring lately. Not sure what the alternative is though?

TemperanceWest · 17/10/2026 22:21

MNHQ have resorted to bumping threads themselves. Things are clearly not good.

I’m so old I remember when the OG mouldies went off and created their own secret chat forum. Not that I was invited 🤣

boxofshite · 17/10/2026 22:00

the implication was that Netmums was a bit 'crushed velvet furniture and my luvvly hubby' in tone and that MN was a bit more intellectually upmarket.

Shloopie · 17/10/2026 22:29

I've just looked at Netmums forum and that forum is tumbleweed, RIP, fully deceased.

AuntiePettitoes · 17/10/2026 22:32

Years ago you could recognise names of posters which made it more personal even though a few were quite annoying. But it's very impersonal these days.

Interesting. It's funny who they allow to stay vs who they delete.
My SIL has been on mumsnet almost since the beginning, her kids are adults so she mainly posts on here for a laugh these days.
She has multiple accounts and uses different wifis- her home, part time job, parents home, kids home.
She knows the type of threads that winds up mnetters and will post fake scenarios, long running threads, really interesting stories then will say I'll be back with an update but never does.
She said so many of her threads have been (rightly) reported but mumsnet never really bothers to investigate properly.
She has way to much time on her hands!!

boxofshite · 17/10/2026 23:21

Yes I noticed that!

Seems to me that far more people have become wary of responding to threads just lately. So many seem to have been written with the aid of ChatGPT or AI, so you're unsure whether the OP is a real person. It makes you reluctant to reply.
