Broken wrist, cast and school clothes

Hi all. Dd (6) has broken her wrist and is in a cast. I think she’ll need to wear sling with it a bit as she’s struggling. sending her back to school on Monday hopefully.

She normally wears a dress to school with polo underneath and cardigan over top. The weather is getting cool so she’s wearing tights underneath.

Just trying to work out what is easiest for her to wear as I think she’s going to struggle going to the loo at school with tights and dress - but not sure. I feel like she’d be better off in just her PE leggings/joggers, her polo and a decent cardigan for a while (draped over the bad arm potentially) but not sure if school would be happy with that or if I’m just fretting over nothing. What have other people done please? Thanks!

What has she been wearing at home and how is she managing?

It’s a perfectly reasonable adjustment to wear PE joggers, especially for the first few days.

Anyone who has broken their wrist (I have!!) will know it gets easier as the days go by.

Try to avoid the sling though, as I imagine the doctor has said too.

Talk to the school. Ours say do what ever works in a situation like this.

I broke my wrist this year (scaphoid). The sling was recommended to elevate the wrist regularly as there is not great blood supply ti that little bone and elevation helps healing. It also helped to act as a deterrent of people walking into me in busy corridors.

it also helped later in the day when the swelling increased and it throbbed a bit.

i couldn’t do buttons and struggled with zips. Also nothing that fastened at the the back such as bras. So simple to pull up clothing sounds sensible.

i wouldn’t have been able to lace shoes either

Hope she heals well 😊

Thank you, I’ll go with joggers I think then. Can’t get hold of school to check over weekend and not really wanting to buy new clothes just for this.

Leggings and T-shirts at home. I’ve been getting her dressed etc tho.

It’s been a traumatic few days as the break was bad, a&e was bad bad, and the cast was too tight so lots of pain and we’re still not quite on track; hospital have sorted it now but yeah. She’s been very wobbly.

The sling is just to get her back into school and a bit less overwhelmed for the first few days, then she’ll get fed up with it and quit - she fractured her other arm when she was in reception so know what she’s like with one!

Thank you :) we had loads of swelling so have had to keep it elevated a lot, it sounds very similar. Hoping it will ease off with time..! Actually very helpful to hear what an adult has felt with this as she keeps telling me it stings, then I google that and go into a spiral ha. She’s been saying it hurts, but throb isn’t really in her vocabulary yet so it could well be that :)

We’ll go for pull on things then. I’ve bought her a poncho rain coat as I figured that was going to be the biggest problem!

when dc had a broken leg school allowed pe kit to be worn. i.e. school jumper or cardigan over t-shirt and jogging bottoms.

This is reassuring - thanks!

We got a couple of larger jumpers from a friend who had older kids. So it fitted over the pot.

exhaustedandoverit · 17/10/2026 16:11

My son’s school were happy with him wearing school coloured joggers and a hoodie, his jumpers were too tight to go over the cast (full arm) comfortably. They said they’d rather have him in school and comfortable than not at all. He was allowed to stay in at breaks with a friend and kept his sling on.
I bought fleece lined oversized hoodies for him as it’s was a bit chilly, bonus is that now they actually fit him a year on.

We did PE jogging bottoms, polo shirt, and then I bought a couple of cheap hoodies in a size too big so they’d fit over the cast in the school colour.

Thank you so much everyone. It is getting cold so think I might be investing in a couple of extra sizes of cardigans and hopefully they’ll be alright for next year!

Sounds like primary schools are quite sensible about this, thank goodness

Both my twins broke their arms and school was more than happy to adapt their uniform, from PE kit to one of their own cardigans/hoodies from home with sleeves big enough to accommodate cast.

StopGo · 17/10/2026 18:16

Oh my! Your DD has been through the mill. Only send her back when she is ready. Speak to the school on Monday and take it from there.

SophiaSW1 · 17/10/2026 18:18

Mine has recently done the same. I got her some stretchy jersey school trousers from M&S which is so much easier for her to manage one handed.

IckyIck · 17/10/2026 18:19

She definitely needs to wear the sling.
