Small job perks

Do you have an unexpected perk at work? I'm not talking about big things like private healthcare or a company car, but small things that make life better or make you smile.

My current job allows me to order library books from across the county and they get delivered to my desk!

No
i work in hospitality and at my place we don’t even get a free meal on a 9 hour shift.

Sunshineandrainbow · 16/10/2026 09:22

When the hospital introduced free breakfast for staff I loved it. 2 slices of wholemeal toast and butter just hit the spot when working in A and E for the day!

Probably sounds ridiculous but I loved it. Changed jobs now :(

I get a free toastie and hot drink every shift and I never do more than 3-4 hours unless it’s a special event. We also get tons of Amazon returns donated, literal pallets of them, and I get to sort them all out and it’s just so gloriously random 😂. Crotch rot cream, silicone bowl liners ( no bowls), tongue scrapers, tooth brushes, cleaning stuff, a table top dish washer, all kinds of herbal stick on patches, flip flops, drill bits, odd shoes, random kitchen tools, a pillow case, 10,000 bobbles, 72 sets of stick on nails . You just never know what’s next and it really brightens my day.

Not sure if it’s a small thing but we get a Christmas hamper. It’s usually has some posh tea and coffee, crisps, biscuits and a piece of cake, also something like socks or a buff and a pen. Everything comes from ethical producers and companies too. The only downside is the biscuits and cake are always vegan and gluten free so can be a bit disappointing.

Exactly the sort of thing I meant - small things that really improve the day (and now I fancy toast and butter).

I used to work somewhere that ended up with a huge number of boxes of mince pies. I had one for breakfast every work morning from December to mid March!

We used to get free fruit at my old workplace and it was a nice little perk

Lots of free coach outings to historical places of interest and 3 parties a year to thank our volunteers!

We used to have work volunteer outings on historic buses - slow but so much fun! The bus owners were always happy to take extra passengers when they went to a rally or event as long as you chipped in towards diesel, I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it all.

In a past job, DH was entitled to use a bedroom in a castle for £15 a night. He also sometimes used an office there, as it was more convenient than his actial office 15 miles away.

He didnt work in the castle.

We get a box of bananas in the breakroom every week.

We have one of those coffee machines in each breakroom that does all kinds of coffees and cocoa, all free, I sometimes have a cocoa but I'm not a coffee drinker so I pay for my own tea bags (they do provide tea bags but they're Lipton so no thanks) but its nice for all the coffee drinkers. Except if you pick espresso cocoa it comes out with blueberry soup mixed in, the machine is a bit quirky...

I nearly lost my head once on an open top bus when the driver parked up and misjudged the low hanging trees 🤣

I wfh. I rest my case.

I do everything I can to avoid WFH.

I hate it because I'm just not disciplined enough.

Plus I work in a stunning ancient manor house that I don't have to clean 😁

Natsku · 16/10/2026 14:00

And not my job per se, but the local union chapter that I am in because of my job has lots of nice little perks like it has a cabin at the nearby ski resort that you can put your name in a hat for to get a week there for dead cheap and cheap outings like last year there was a family trip to an amusement park including transportation, and this year there's a weekend in Estonia - transport and hotel for 120 euros (and the wider union has loads of benefits including travel and accident insurance)

Mumof1andacat · 16/10/2026 14:02

We get nothing (nhs) but our consultants club together and we get a nice, thoughtful Christmas present each.

OctoberUsername · 16/10/2026 14:03

One of my previous jobs gave us a cash bonus in our payslip for Christmas week.

£5 😍

I now run my own business after 13 years in teaching. I take absolute joy from the fact that I can now go and see my own children in their harvest festivals, nativities etc. I also plan my days so that I can always drop them off in a morning and pick them up 3 days a week. It might sound like absolutely nothing to some but for me, it is the best perk going 😍

That is a big perk. Biggest one in my workplace and the reason I turned down a higher paid job - flexible hours and a time bank system so I can always go to events and appointments during work hours, and take days off when I want to.

Imicola · 16/10/2026 14:24

Occasional £50 vouchers is probably the only real perk, if that counts. That and getting to travel to interesting places, although a meeting room is a meeting room, no matter what continent it is on!

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 16/10/2026 14:28

I’m a maths tutor and I wfh so life is pretty sweet. Probably my favourite perk is that I can work in my slippers. Only problem is every Christmas all the kids buy me slippers so I have so many pairs!

Tromh · 16/10/2026 14:39

We get a Christmas hamper, the occasional lunch paid for, and some random free gifts. This year we have all been given a scent diffuser thing, a mug and a water bottle at different points throughout the year.
One year there was a plant for people to keep on their desk but none of them lasted long.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/10/2026 14:49

We don’t even currently have an office.
We are meant to, but we’re moving, moved out of the old office several weeks ago, new one won’t be ready for 10 months.
