did you have a new ‘toy’ trend every other week when you were a kid?

I’m in my 30s and remember certain trends in school - mainly luminous socks, just do it bags, kickers. Primary school maybe scooby doos etc. But I definitely don’t remember a new obsession every other week? DD is in primary and I hear about a new trend almost every week - squishy dumpling, butter, Labubu, now it’s nee doh etc. Has consumerism just gone a bit mad or was I just too young to remember? I genuinely can’t think of comparable things at this frequency from when I was in school!

I’m early 50s and I remember trends coming and going pretty fast. One of my friends had every single My Little Pony and Care Bear. We collected sticker albums, collected rubbers, Garbage Pail Kids, Ninja Turtles, lip balms. I remember every Christmas there was one gift that everyone wanted and I had a friend who worked at ToysRUs who managed to get me the last Buzz Lightyear in the shop for my little sister.
My brother collected watches - he had one with a tiny calculator on it.
We all had the Argos catalogue, and circled the things we wanted. My tastes changed as I got older and moved from the toy section to the tech section.

I'm in my sixties and can remember TV adverts on all the time for new toys.
We just didn't expect to get them until our birthday, Christmas or if we saved up our pocket money or struck very lucky.

Yes that was more like it. We had furbys and other things but like you say it went on the birthday / Xmas list. Things right now feel so much more instant.

I'm in my 60s and there were a couple of toy shops on the road en route to school. I can still picture the window of one in the run up to Christmas when I was about 7. Multicoloured fairy lights around the edge with cotton wool "snow" and spray "snow" in the corners. Full of every kind of toy and game and right in the middle, my dream doll.
About 2ft tall, long brown hair dressed in a red satin dress and shiny black shoes. I wanted that doll SO badly.
About a week before Christmas she disappeared. Replaced by a big yellow teddy. 😞
But, Christmas day arrived, and there she was. All mine. 💕

I didn't, but I was a child in the 1970s.

My DC were more like you @Namechange12309 but then they're a similar age! Smile

60s born, birthdays, and Christmas were for toys, but we occasionally got money for books and we had a comic most Saturday mornings and they often came with a gift on the front!

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 15/10/2026 21:07

That's such a lovely story @Whatshitnow

I'm in my 70s so you would probably guess that I really didn't get new toys that often.
Christmas and Birthdsys only and maybe a ballon of we went to Woolworths in Abergavenny on Market Day.
I also got a comic every week at the market. In return I carried two bags of potatoes home!

My children had many more toys than me but I certainly didn't buy big items often.
They would have had popular things and crazes like rubbers, pens etc. They also got gifts when we visited their grandparents as neither loved close by.

I think I had a good childhood, though my father was a sulky alcoholic who would withdraw completely if things did not go his way. I found that I would keep toys pristine and not complete craft items because I never knew if I would have anything else.
My wife bought me Lego Bouquet sets for Christmas last year. I didn't make them until Easter even though I could have a new set every week.

Childhood experiences tend to linger on.,,

I remember the gifts on the comics from the 70s. Hair slides, combs, little plastic puzzles.
There did used to be trends with inexpensive toys like clackers and those light up balls etc. My parents were pretty hard up so it was mainly birthdays and Christmas for me. Or in the school holidays from my gran.

Yeah I more remember toys from magazines or McDonald’s happy meals!

You've got a short memory.

Pokemon cards, gooey aliens, beanie babies, Betty Spaghetti, Polly Pocket dolls with the rubbery clothes, tamagotchis, furbies, fluffy flamingo pens, the pencil cases with the pop out calculators and sharpeners, lip gloss, Bubblegum characters, Bang on the Door, there were loads of them.

We'd wait until Christmas for big ticket or hard to get items like Furbies but gooey aliens, Pokemon cards, lip glosses and many other things were pocket money impulse buys. Just like all the Squishies and fake labubus.

StockingsByTheFire · 15/10/2026 22:59

Born in the 80s I remember at school:

Trolls
Pogs
Tamagotchi
Pound puppies
Boglins
Popples
Groovy chick

And probably a tonne more if I put my mind to it

We had equal heaps of crap. In cereal boxes too. Things seem like crazes now because twatty influencers buy up fad items in bulk. As do resellers. So the the "thing" is then made artificially rare, and more coveted.

I don’t remember too many ‘crazes’, each one lasted quite a while. Gonks(I never had any), clackers, furry pencil cases.

Oh my goodness the cereal box toys! I remember the excitement every morning hoping that it would be toy day, and that I'd get the one I'd been coveting from the back of the box. The joy when it arrived and was the right one. 😂

I’m late 50’s and there were trends. Like Rubik’s cube, Deely boppers, Walkmans, and everyone at school collected smelly rubbers. But we didn’t get toys every week. There was always one big toy at Christmas everyone wanted like cabbage patch dolls or pound puppies. I worked in Argos from the late 80’s and was able to get my brother the toys of the year like He Man, Mask and Ghostbusters.

Maybe we were just poor 😂 I never had those things so maybe I’ve erased them from my memory 😂
