US President Donald Trump has said the Pentagon will no longer livestream the firing squad execution of Fort Hood gunman Nidal Malik Hasan, after the announcement faced bipartisan criticism and vice president JD Vance said he would not watch it.

Mr Trump said on social media that publicly airing the execution “might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan”.

But he added that “any very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device”.

This is going to be an interesting few days. Did they not even think there would be a backlash?

John Galligan, a lawyer for Hasan working primarily on civil issues, told the BBC that Trump's decision to cancel the livestream of his execution "comes as no surprise".
"It was initially a dumb decision and statement by Hegseth to livestream any execution - and it violated the Army's own regulation," Galligan said.
He said Hasan is paralysed from the chest down, something that Trump "allegedly didn't even know" when he approved the livestream plan.
"The damage has already been done - the Army is now just trying to clean up the mess," Galligan said. "It will permanently remain a stain on our military justice system."

Prior to the president’s announcement that the live stream of Nidal Hasan’s execution by firing squad will no longer go ahead, a new poll from the Washington Post and ABC News showed that 80% of Americans oppose a live online broadcast of the execution.

While the partisan breakdown shows that more Democrats (91%) oppose a live stream, 64% of Republicans still opposed the move.

Meanwhile, a majority of Americans, 53%, support executing Hasan by firing squad – while 42% are opposed
