I’ve treated myself to the braun silk pro 5, I think that’s what it’s called. I used it for the first time yesterday and could smell what smelt like burning hair, not really intense but definitely noticeable ?
I did shave close before I used it. Does this mean it’s working ?

I've just bought the Phillips Lumea.

I did smell burning 🔥 a bit, guess like you say its working. Interested to see the results.

How long do you think 🤔

That’s good then you smelt it aswell 😆 well I’m already checking to see if my hairs growing back any less, so I think I might be a little too optimistic! But people online seem to say after a couple of sessions they noticed less growth..
Did you find it painful?

I am doing it very slowly because it seems to get quite hot so I only do about 10 zaps on each side per treatment at the moment

Does the lumea have different intensities ? The braun has 3 levels and I tried the highest one first and I nearly jumped out my skin 😆 had to put it down to the lowest setting which was much more manageable.

Yes it has levels one to five and as I never do anything by half measures I am doing everything on five so perhaps that's why it's getting hot so quickly

Really we could do with somebody coming on here who has got experience of having used them in the past to tell us how the hair growth slows over time and how long we would expect it to take

I've been using one (a cheap one from Amazon) on and off for about a year. It took about 6 weeks of weekly sessions before I noticed a difference. It worked well on my legs and underarms, and I barely needed to shave, but not so much difference on my bikini line unfortunately 😐 Once I stopped doing it weekly, it started noticeably growing back though so I've had to start at the beginning again and need to remember to keep up with them!

Yours might be more effective than mine, which isnt painful (other than on the odd spot) even on the highest setting. It does small a bit like singed hair though if theres even a small bit of stubble!

Thanks for this ! Yes it was that singed hair smell, I tried to shave as close as I could, which is annoying because I get terrible rashes and ingrown hairs on my bikini area from shaving (hence trying the ipl out)

I’ve got a Braun one, and it works well - but you don’t really notice for 6 weeks, and then you do need to keep topping up as recommended else it does go back to normal

MadMAGA · 15/10/2026 15:34

I have a Braun one, bought a couple of years ago. It works well, only hurts if I accidentally zap a mole, and I only need to do it every few months on my legs and bikini line. My armpit hair has proven surprisingly stubborn, so needs zapping more often. I find the burning hair smell quite satisfying.

Oh great ! Does the hair not grow back at all if you keep up with it ?

After the initial 12 weeks how often do you have to do it ? And does it not grow back at all or comes back more sparse?

I top up every few months, or when I notice it needs doing. It's definitely sparser, more like the odd hair here and there rather than even growth.

I've had a Lumea for a couple of years. Worked very well on legs - I do try and do the monthly top-up treatments, but get very little regrowth in between so could probably get away with less often.

Unfortunately, it's not worked well at all on armpits - I've repeated the intial phase (zapping every two weeks) several times and still have to shave frequently. I'm not sure why I've had such differing results!

Just to say I put off electrolysis for my whole life, tried every other method including ones mentioned on here. Turns out it hasn’t been that expensive and the pain is no more than plucking after paracetamol (apart from under my nose, agony). Wish I’d done it years ago, the hair is gone, permanently. It’s took 4 hours of treatment, around £400 for the lower half of my face. Blonde, grey and dark hairs.

Good luck with what you’re trying I think everyone is different
