Workplace bullies who believe they’re a nice person

I don’t understand how some people have such lack of self-awareness.
Im not talking about people where one person disagrees with another but people who have a long list of other people they’ve been nasty and vindictive to and in some cases bullied out of the workplace.

yet if you asked them they’d say ‘I say it how it is’ and regularly wax lyrical about all these positive things about themselves.

They even said to me once ‘I know x and y both blamed me for leaving our work but I’m not to blame, all I do is tell it like it is’.

They’re at a level that they have a lot of sway. Most people act pally with them to keep on their good side because we all know how awful they are and the other people they’ve forced out.

They don’t think they’re nice they think they’re right. My bullies framed me as pulling organisation in the wrong direction and that they were right/ more aligned with our aims. There was nothing nice about it.

They have a group of friends (albeit you think the friends are spineless and only friends with her out of fear)?

Summerstuff · 14/10/2026 15:43

all I do is tell it like it is’.

yuck. Awful expression.
along with “I’m too nice” and “I’m too honest”

They don’t have friends necessarily but people are certainly friendly because we all walk around on eggshells.

Agree as well, they always think they’re right! One person I saw today and it prompted this thread. She left 10 years and but still said she thinks of how awful her experience was now and again.

Are they in management?

I worked with a woman who was awful. She was in a management role. If she didn’t like you, you were doomed. I fell into the category of being one of the chosen few and I hated it, but it meant work was bearable. She got promoted sideways (NHS) and is still a nasty little bully. Nobody will speak out about her because she’s powerful.

My last work place (retired now), someone said they tell it how it is. I couldn’t help myself I burst out Ha! Is that what you think! Really?

She pretty much avoided me from then on. Which suited me tbh.

Springduckling · 14/10/2026 16:19

Ha - ' I tell it like it is,'

But if you said 'Jan, you're a c*' they wouldn't be happy.

topcat2014 · 14/10/2026 16:19

I remember hearing "I speak as I find" in my first job. I soon learned to avoid that person

seahorsessky · 14/10/2026 16:21

Too many people use the "only being honest" one. You can be honest without being rude and nasty, as in only say it if it's necessary/kind/someone asked you. There's no need to tell someone you don't like their dress/you think their girlfriend is ugly.

'I don't suffer fools gladly' is always code for 'I'm a bit of a cunt'.

My boss's ex partner was an absolute twunt to me as she thought I fancied him. He ended up dumping her and running off with a much younger and nicer colleague (they're happily married now).

She made my life hell for a year, nice to me one day and a bitch the next - I'd be walking on eggshells 😒

Weirdly, I bumped into her at an event in the summer and she was all sweetness and light. Later on in the evening she was so drunk she fell head first down a steep flight of stairs and broke her glasses, how embarrassing 🤓😉

I worked with someone that had many people state that he was the reason for leaving.

The problem was not just him but poor management that wouldn't confront him as he would shout, rant and rave at them.

It didn't help that he was part of the bosses favoured group, who pushed people out if he didn't like them or they went against him (Asked questions).
