Neighbour’s noisy cat

Hi everybody,
Looking for some advice on what I can do to deter visits from a noisy neighbourhood cat.
it wakes me up almost nightly from outside with loud drawn out mewing that just goes on and on and on, at all hours.
I don’t know who it belongs to or even what it looks like - I can’t actually see it, and there are a few cats that live along my street.
I’m a single parent so can’t go outside to look for it when I hear it.
I don’t want to hurt it but i want it to go away.
TIA

My guess from all that noise would be that this is an unneutered cat, which means either it’s a stray or its owners don’t give a fuck.

Can you ask around? The cat owners might know more & the cat might be bothering their cats.

Oh interesting, I don’t know anything about cats so thank you for the insight.
I can ask but I’m not sure if it will be any help as the people I do know/speak to aren’t cat owners

I do occasionally hear cats fighting as well, so could be that it’s bothering other cats

It could be an unspayed female on heat calling for a male, the fighting could be males or females or mating. Do you think it's in your garden are there trees and bushes, is it only at night.

EricMunch · 14/10/2026 16:29

Thanks. I think it’s in the front garden, or the alley at side of house. There are bushes in front garden, is it a good idea to remove them?

@EricMunch it will probably move on soon.

No don't remove the hedges, there will be wildlife, there and we need greenery., have you got ring doorbell that picks animals up. You'd probably smell male cat urine, it's very strong or may find poo but there's not much you can do especially if you can't see the cat.

@EricMunch cats are always quieter when eating a bit of roast chicken

Spray some strong scents like citrus and peppermint and they will start hanging out elsewhere. Keep it up for a while though so they don’t come back.
