Starlink internet - anyone got it and did you install it yourself?

ISPs driving me mad. Thinking of getting Starlink. Does anyone have any experience to share?

Also I see you can pay £74 for professional installation. Did you pay for this or diy? If diy was it difficult? How much tech knowledge required? We have practical knowhow but v little in the IT area.

nb really, really not interested in anyone’s views on Elon Musk, just Starlink please 😊

We have and installed ourselves easy peasy. We just had it on the lawn for a week or two whilst we figured the best spot for it for signal.

Have you got existing holes in to the house from previous satellite dish or Internet?

gullgal · 13/10/2026 18:45

I can't separate my opinion on Musk from my opinion on Starlink unfortunately

Wheniswinenight · 13/10/2026 18:46

We have it. Rural Ireland and after years of useless broadband we finally found one that works. Have it 2.5 years now and never looked back. I don’t give a shite about Musk, just happy to be able to work from home occasionally and I no longer have to hear the constant moaning from the kids about them ‘lagging’ when gaming.
We got a guy to install ours. I’m not sure what was involved but we thought it was worth it to get it done properly. We have a large house and he put in a mesh system to run it around the house.
Anyway I highly recommend it.

Thanks for your reply @MightyGoldBear. I think we’ve got holes from a previous tv arial but I don’t know if they are in a good position. Is it very variable depending where you site it? DH would be fine with physically putting it up anyway.

The guy who installed ours came out first and put up something in different places to find the best place to put it. We wouldn’t have had a clue.

Thank you. Our house is quite large and we’ve never managed to get good coverage everywhere we want it. I’m minded to pay for the installation, particularly if they do more than just put the satellite dish up.

Was he from Starlink? Or independent?

We have it. It's definitely been worth it for us as our internet was utterly useless with no sign of anything better coming. However, my parents on the other side of our town have super-fast broadband and they get better speeds than our Starlink. If we could have that instead, we would.

We had the local approved guy come to fit as we wanted it up on the roof and didn't think we could do that ourselves.

The customer service bot is useless. I wanted to bring forward the billing date so it went out on 'bills day' but the bot just could not understand that I wasn't asking to delay paying my bill.

OhMyGodSusan · 13/10/2026 19:05

We have Virgin and get 800mpbs. Star link is only worth it if you travel a lot or can't get good Internet.

Wheniswinenight · 13/10/2026 19:05

Independent fella. I’m not sure starlink have installers? Maybe they do!

When I looked at the order form you can add “professional installation” for £74. I don’t know if Starlink have their own installers or it’s contractors.

Is it not possible to get through to a human then?

Thank you. We can’t get Virgin here. We are very rural and pretty limited for choice.

We have it in France. We got a local guy to install it as it involved climbing up into the roof. It’s not perfect but our internet wasn’t much faster than dial up there before so it’s about a million times better than that!

mumonthehill · 13/10/2026 19:20

We did it ourselves but if it takes paying I would! We are rural, rubbish mobile signal and no fibre and it changed everything for the better. We were struggling to work from home and it was a nightmare. We have had no issues at all since having it installed. I agree I would rather it was not Musk but honestly we had no other choice. People who do not live rurally have no idea!

MsJenBarber · 13/10/2026 20:10

Thank you @mumonthehill and @mynameiscalypso

It sounds like people who have it are very happy with it. I think I will give it a try.

We have it, after many years of unworkable WiFi I eventually gave in. Easy to fit ourselves, we had it on the grass outside for a few weeks (with the cable through an open window) until we knew it worked, then paid a local aerial firm £165 to mount the dish thing on the roof and bring the cable inside properly. Had quotes for up to £800 for the same job!

We only pay for the most basic package speed wise which is still wayyyy better than previously so we're very happy. I would have much preferred an alternative because of the Musk thing but after trying numerous other options I gave in and yep. It's been a godsend.

blackteaplease · 13/10/2026 20:19

We are also rural and have it as does my neighbour. Its easy to install and works brilliantly, we had no other option either. No fibre or airband. Ours is on the gable end of our house, DH installed it using a long ladder and a masonry drill bit. Our neighbours have theirs on the flat garage roof

I can't separate my opinion on Musk from my opinion on Starlink unfortunately

The principle is correct as he's a total grifter and odious low life. However principles dont pay the bills and only other broadband option was so inadequate i looked like a mirage from the early 80s continously saying ....can you hear me....can you hear me. Mr Musks starlink means I can continue to work from home and have video calls and it will have to be prised out of my cold dead hands!

Its plug and play so set up is simple if you plop it at ground level. If you want to install connected high up a wall and bring wire thro your wall then bit more complicated.

Distribution thro a house isnt just starlink. There's loads of distributors that can bounce the wifi around your house. Amazon has loads for example.

You make a very good point. I am not in the position of having no choice. Any I'm glad that you agree he is vile

It was the same as any other router wehave done before. Its was so straightforward and easy for us. We've added some boosters we already had to boost it around into garden etc easy to find the best signal too.
