Hi everyone,

I'm a single dad to my 3 babies.

My partner took her own life in October 2024.

She got the dla payment for our boy.

I had to stop work and with how full on its been didn't realise regarding the dla she was receiving.

Ive sent in an application and they received it on 19th August.

Does anyone think in this rare case it could be backdated because my boy was awarded it in August 2024 for 3 years?

Or ultimately its my fault I didn't contact them.

I perhaps shouldn't of sent in application because everything was kinda agreed if you get me till next year.

Maybe I should of contacted them.

I'm just a bit lost - help pls X

So the payments stopped when she passed? Or did they bounce back to dla so they shut the claim? Sorry your post isn't clear.

BurnkeyBallBag · 13/10/2026 13:55

I dont have a clue, all i know is yesterday i found some paperwork.

i have sent a new claim in like I said.

im ringin them later today but they will probably say i should of informed them hen she passed.

Once she passed surely the payments stopped? Or if not where did they go?
I don't think your child should be disadvantaged in terms of a gap in payment caused by parent death. Unless it was going to another person who was the child's guardian and was still being used for the child?

Payments stopped and we have missed nearly 2 years in payments

I feel a bit of a fool but a lot has been going on X

They would of closed the claim down when it bounced back that said ring and ask. Its worth a go and it costs nothing to ask. Sorry about your wife. X

Of course and I hope they would be compassionate about that. I hope it gets sorted. I'm so sorry for your and your children's loss x

The DLA was awarded to the child, not your late partner, so you didn't need to reapply, you just needed to update them with your details. Unless your child's needs have increased substantially I would probably just call today and explain the situation and ask them to transfer the claim to you and back date the missed payments.

Good luck, hopefully they’ll send you the money if you hadn’t realised and just noticed it. They’d budgeted for your child for those years so it’s hopefully still in the budget and as it’s not been paid you’ll get it
