Knitting a scarf...a daft idea?

A very lovely friend of mine has recently returned to the UK for palliative care. I'd love to be able to give him something personal that will actually be useful so thinking of knitting him a scarf. One slight problem.....the last time I knitted anything was a bright pink scarf for a Sundy doll when I was 7 or 8 and supervised by a teacher. I can't even make pompoms!!! ! Is it an impossible idea or are there enough YouTube tutorials out there that I may actually be able to make something vaguely useful?

You can do it!

Once you get started you'll fall back into it. Like riding a bike.

I always find casting on and off a bit 😵‍💫 but the rest is easy. Yep, a YT video will be your friend. Good luck and such a lovely idea.

I’m sure you can do it. But just a warning - it takes ages. I am an intermittent knitter and every few years I start a scarf and by the end I remember why I can’t be bothered to knit. Then I forget after a few years and the cycle begins again.

Do it!! A lovely idea. Don't make it too wide.

Lovely idea! Maybe aran or chunky wool so that it grows quicker? Double knit will take forever

Try once you get the hang of it it's quick and easy!
Op, go for it, you can always do a practise run to help get you in the swing of things. You friend will love the effort you've gone to too. Good luck. :)

Not a daft idea at all OP.
It's a lovely thought.
Heavy weight wool and large size needles and it won't take long at all.

I learned to knit and crochet entirely from YouTube, I prefer crochet. Making a scarf for your friend is a lovely idea. Easy and shouldn't take too long even if you're slow.

I think that’s a fantastic idea and he’ll treasure it. And of all the things to knit, a scarf will be one of the easiest.

Choose a wool that is quite thick and chunky enough that you can’t see the individual stitches, so you can just keep it to the one stitch and get used to that rather than keep swapping.

That's my style of knitting 👍
It's a great idea @katscamel and inspiring. I'm thinking it could itch with the wrong wool.
Sorry your friend is sick.
