Baby VERY unhappy at being moved from the Moses Basket to the Big Cot. Help!

My baby is so resistant to being moved out of her Moses basket. I've made her cot as comfortable and cosy as possible but she's crying every hour of the night. In her Moses basket, it was more like one or two wake ups a night. I'm three days in and I am at my wits end.

I sleep next to her so there's no difference there. It's literally just that I've swapped out her basket for the big cot.

This didn't happen with my eldest, he just went with the flow. 😭

Did this happen to you? If so, do you have any advice?

Try putting the basket in the cot.

Try putting the basket in the cot.

Yes I did that.
Has she outgrown the moses basket?
If not - try this.

Yes, I put the basket in the cot too.

I have had the basket in the cot for the past week. Do you think I should leave it longer? I removed it on Saturday morning 😬

She's totally outgrown the basket. She's a big baby in any case but I can't go backwards really, her arms and legs will be hanging over the sides in a month or two!

Ok.... outgrown it 🙁
Plan B.
Is the cot warm enough?
You could put a hot water bottle in to warm the mattress up and then remove it when you put her in.

If she is used to her head being jammed up against the edge of the basket and you are following the foot to foot advice, move her so her head is jammed up against the head of the cot.

I did foot to foot (on her front as I worked out in hospital that’s what she liked) and fecking dd, all swaddled, crawled her way to the top of her bassinet to jam her head up there. Repeatedly. So, I gave in and placed her head to head.

YourVagesty · 12/10/2026 11:32

@Needmorelego I'll try that, can't hurt. I have wondered if she's warm enough.

@TheSandgroper that's so funny! Mine keeps heading north and jamming her head against the top bars. I keep pulling her back down. Maybe she wants to be like that 🤔

@YourVagesty you can only give it a go. I would put a light blanket over her from the waist down and followed the advice of having nothing else but, yes, it was funny.

It was as if dd was saying “oh, are we having a difference of opinion? ‘Cos I can make your life mis-er-able 😁”. She won.

Where does she nap during the day?

I used to use the cot as a safe space during the day - pop them in the cot after a nappy change while I washed my hands, or was putting some washing away, or having a quick shower etc. Popped the mobile on and kept talking to them, so that they got used to just being in the cot before trying it for sleeping.

I went from Moses basket inside Next to Me, then just the Next to Me crib, then once that was outgrown to a cotbed.

Is the cot a full sized cot or something smaller?

Are you using sleeping bags?

nopenotplaying · 12/10/2026 18:03

Sleeping bag, roll up towel or blanket in a u shape and put round her bottom so she feels enclosed. How they sleep them in Nicu when in incubators. I say under the sheet so it’s not loose in the cot

Spirallingdownwards · 12/10/2026 18:08

Put her in the cot for daytime naps too so she associates it with being the place she sleeps.
