Drinks from the past

When I was growing up my parents hardly drank. My aunt and uncle would come over to our house 3-4 times a year to play cards and would bring a bottle of wine. It would be Blue Nun or Black Tower. My sister who is 9 years older than me brought home a Mateus Rose in the oval bottle, I thought she was so sophisticated.

If there was a special occasion and something fizzy was required then it would be Cava. When did Cava stop being the replacement champagne and Prosecco take over? I think I preferred Cava.

At Christmas there would be a bottle of Martini and a bottle of Cinzano, maybe a Sherry. There would still be half a bottle of each left by the next Christmas. Wouldn't happen in my home now.

I can remember going out with friends in the 80s. My friend used to drink "Bezique, Lime and Soda with ice" I think Bezique was a kind of offshoot of Bacardi that isn't made any more.

Are there other drinks that aren't around anymore that people have fond memories of? I know Cinzano and Martini are still available but back in the day they were THE drinks and have now just faded into the background.

For the non drinkers there was TaB, the first diet coke style drink. Were there any others like this?

What about Asti Spumante

tsmainsqueeze · 12/10/2026 07:12

I came on to say Bezique it was my drink of choice with lemonade! When I was a sophisticated 17/18 year old😂
we always had Astispumante at home for celebrations.

Babycham - I thought the little cartoon deer was so cute as a child I couldn’t wait to try it. My parents also had Pernod in the cupboard but rarely drank it. My mum had a gin and bitter lemon once in a blue moon.

We all used to drink archers and lemonade as sophisticated teens.

Can you still get it? I think alcopops made those very sweet drinks a bit sidelined.

Caramac045 · 12/10/2026 07:15

Cherry B and cider. Fondly known as a Legover. Tasted like pop but was higher alcohol than say lager.

FlutteryButterfly · 12/10/2026 07:16

Taboo and Mirage

gillybombilly · 12/10/2026 07:16

I loved a Taboo and lemonade back in the day, not so much Mirage though.

And I felt so sophisticated when I took a bottle of Piemontello to a party 😁

Taboo and Mirage

Snap!

Fasdmama · 12/10/2026 07:17

I was going to say cherry B which I drank at my grandparents when I was about 10. 😬

Traceyatnumber32isaloudgobshite · 12/10/2026 07:18

Taboo and lemonade
Mirage and lemonade
These were my go yo drinks late 80s.

I was planning sn 80s party and wanted to get some but was told its no longer made.

Remember buying Mattrus in the oval bottle. I hated the taste, but thought I was classy af buying some 🤣

Mydogisagentleman · 12/10/2026 07:29

Advocate. Still love it.
Especially the really thick stuff in a kilner jar.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 12/10/2026 07:36

Cava is made by the champagne method, so naturally sparkling. Prosecco is carbonated wine. Prosecco is cheap, one of the reasons it's so popular. I prefer Cava, I'm slightly biased though as I've lived in Spain.

Taboo, blue Curacao and lemonade, Martini, Cinzano to name a few. Tia Maria doesn't seem to be as popular as it once was. I grew up in the days when your grandma used to make you a Snowball at Christmas! I do love a sherry with a mince pie.

Facecreamed · 12/10/2026 07:39

West Coast Cooler.😱

MissyB1 · 12/10/2026 07:40

Tia Maria and coke! I thought I was terribly posh drinking that 😂

Seymour5 · 12/10/2026 07:44

Advocaat with ginger beer. Blue lagoon, which was vodka and curacao. I thought it so sophisticated with its cherry and umbrella.

user1492757084 · 12/10/2026 07:45

Fruit Cup
50/50 Cordial
Creme Sherry
Lemonade
West Coast Cooler
Stout
Shandy
Blackberry Nip and Lemonade
Kahlua and milk
Beer served in small glasses out of long neck bottles. One or two longnecks were all that were consumed at a family bbq.

I used to drink Archers with soda.

catdistributionsystem · 12/10/2026 07:49

Bacardi Breezers!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 12/10/2026 07:50

Oh I loved Archers and lemonade in my early 20s.
My grandparents always had Snowballs at Christmas.
Mateus Rosé, do you still get that?

Mauvish1 · 12/10/2026 07:51

"Pony - the little drink with the BIG kick!"

(Was it sweet sherry?)

Harvey's Bristol cream

Our red wine of choice as students was Chianti or valpolicella.

Called knickerdroppers in our neck of the woods

Lovemelovemycat · 12/10/2026 07:52

Musecco

Divebar2021 · 12/10/2026 07:53

In the 80’s my drink trajectory was Diamond White cider then the considerably more sophisticated (😏) Taboo and lemonade ( which was peach flavoured I believe). In the early 90’s Two Dogs lemonade became popular and there was a run of similar brands.

MeowDoku · 12/10/2026 07:56

Pernod. No one drinks that anymore. My mum rarely drank outside of weddings, new year etc but even now I associate new year's eve with the smell of rive gauche and pernod and black
