The payment has gone out of my account this morning I had renewed elsewhere and I had forgotten to cancel. It is a lot of money!

Can I get the money back somehow?

Just call them and explain

Yes you can still cancel it. There will be the 14 day cooling off period.
You need to contact them straight away.

Thank you, I can't see how to get in touch with them as they don't have a phone number. I will have to use the chat bot it seems.

Yes. you arent allowed dual insurance therefore one company the auto renewal company will refund you but you will need evidence of the other policy starting the same day. Just explain you werent aware of the opt in tacit renewal status of that policy.

Use the chat bot to ask for a proper address, email or phone number and ideally cancel in writing as your evidence. I wouldn’t trust a chat bot conversation alone for this.

the other thing you should do now is log onto your new policy and turn off/request that any auto-renewal "for your convenience" (pffft) is turned off.

I always keep auto renewal on for home insurance to be fair in case there is some sort of emergency the following year and we forget to do it because of hospital/bereavement/a very unlikely extreme and extended backpacking trip without signal but you should get it back without any issue
