Would love to write a book. I have it a go many years ago and back then there was a website full of writers starting out and we’d submit our book ideas/chapters to review then and I had rave reviews for mine I was such a high from it, then for whatever reason never went back to finish it. This was about 15/20 years ago.

i would love to give it another bash but I see lots of ppl self publish their own books on Amazon now and it seems saturated I’m sure mine would get lost in the mix and nothing would happen but I do have this desire to write it and share it (under a writer name not my own as it would be more of a fantasy that would land me in a lot of hot water with my family 😂)

anyone here wrote a book and got it published? How’d it go?

You don't have to publish it to write it. Maybe you should try writing fan fiction first and post it on. People can comment on your works so it's fun.

I've had a few books published and my advice depends on what you want from writing.

If you like instant feedback, then I agree with @QuestionableMouse that fanfic will be more fulfilling.

Getting published is a hard and slow slog with a lot of rejection and frustration along the way.

Self-publishing is easier but, as you say, you'll probably be sending your story out into the ether to be ignored.

Resurrecting a very old username to say that I have self-published fiction on Amazon. I had a bit of success initially because by chance I had a plot related to a subject that was topical at the time - I'd written it before it hit the news. It tailed off, partly because I was never very good at self promotion. I still write, and publish when I have something to publish, but regard it more as a hobby.

I would say, if you want to write a book, get on and write it, and think about publication later. Yes, there is a lot of stuff on Amazon, so you might sink without trace. But an awful lot of the self-published stuff is crap, so if you can string a sentence together with decent SPAG you're off to a good start. And learning how to use Amazon's categories and keywords to best advantage helps.
