Go on then, what really was the best year you remember and why?

Mine’s probably 2006-2007. Pre-crash, things felt optimistic, I was a student and everything was cheap as chips. Indie music and clubs were the best. Nobody had camera phones and you could get shitfaced and no documentation of it.
my tuition fees were £2000 a year.
internet functioned enough to be useful, we had MySpace for music and AOL chat etc. we had iPods and MP3 players. Nights out were fun and everyone felt happier. Clothes were better quality but still affordable (Topshop!).
flights were cheap, it was ridiculously cheap to go to America everything was almost half the price due to exchange rate.
Everything went off a cliff post 2008

Actually maybe 2000 or 1999. The millennium dome was crazy (did anyone else go on a school trip?)

1991
Began training for my career, met a friend that would transform my life in the most profound way, world opened up, music, travel, food, adventures, people.
A family tragedy had occurred a few years before and 1991 marked my first sight of sunlight and the black clouds began to break up.
There have been many many brilliant years but 1991 was for me, the start of living life again.

Wow that’s so amazing. 1991 music must have been absolutely banging too. Glad to hear it was such a poignant year for you - I was born a few years before so I would have been school age and don’t particularly remember it!

Really hard to say, and to pinpoint. In my lifetime, (just under 60 years) I have had good years, average years, brilliant years, and shit years. This year was a weird combo of shit for the first third, then brilliant for the second third, and the third third is a bit stressful... so far. A bunch of things have gone wrong in the last few weeks, but the late Spring and Summer were really enjoyable.

This is true I think sometimes it’s rarely clear cut and so many personal variables such as finances relationships etc that can be completely separate to the ‘overall’ that’s happening in the world at the time. But I feel post 2008 financial crash and then post Covid something definitely shifted and things don’t feel the same.

1996 sticks in my mind.

Hot summer and the Euros. And the music!

Yes I remember this as I’d have been almost finished primary. Also 1998 felt huge with France with the World Cup too. Sport felt uniting in the 90’s

1996 was great and then 1997 when Labour got in felt like such a positive, exciting time. The music was great and it just felt like the future was going to be amazing.
I was young, solvent, in love abd living my absolute best life.

I would say 1996 - 2006 were golden years for me personally.

1988 - left home at 18 to start nurse training, loved living in the nurses home and learning all about nursing. Had no worries, enough money, went out drinking and having fun, drove around in my mini, music was amazing. Life was great.
I just wish I’d seen how slim I actually was, how pretty I was, and I wish I’d had enough confidence to make a play for the guy I fancied.

  1. Moved abroad for study, experienced many firsts away from parents and met DH for the first time.

The end of 2018 was great for me. We'd moved to a nice area and bought our first house. The DCs were young but out of babyhood so I was starting to get myself back. I remember feeling so optimistic and happy, like I'd really made it in life and had everything I ever dreamed of. Then 2020 came and I haven't felt that spark in my life since.
