Ladies aged 40+ a hair question…

Just a quick one as I’m questioning myself 😅 to those of you that are age 40+ Do you wear your hair in a slick back ponytail? I’ve started doing this lately (when my hair is starting to get greasy etc) and I love it, it makes a change as I normally just wear my hair down tbh. But I’m wondering is it only for the youth of today!? 🤣🤣

I'm 42 I just wear my hair as I always have my whole life! It's a few inches past my shoulders. Generally I just wear it down. Occasionally tied up in a messy bun or ponytail. I don't give it much thought! I usually just trim it myself and about once every 10 years get it cut into a bob and then immediately grow it!, I'm very low maintenance!

Goldenmimx · 10/10/2026 14:24

I do. Actually I’ve never thought that I’m probably too old for it but it’s a good question. But screw it, if you like it and it’s convenient then keep doing it

Kitchenbattle · 10/10/2026 14:24

Yeah mine is about the same length, sometimes I do heatless sock curls and sometimes I have it straight. Sometimes I pin the front sections back in a twist. The slick back is all new 😅

No. If I wear my hair slicked back, I look like someone is halfway through executing my father in the electric chair. (Very specific but it's true.)

elperil · 10/10/2026 14:31

I'm a bit older than 40! I have shoulder length (coloured obv.) blonde hair. It is flyaway and does my head in the minute a slight bit of wind catches it. Nope, life is too short for all that styling every day and to keep having to push it around my head when it doesn't do as it's told!

So yes, I gather my tresses into a ponytail (short one ha ha), put a matching (to my colour scheme for the day) very nice scrunchie, and out the door I go. Occasionally I will pile it up and use one of those Spanish combs at the back. Special occasions only ha ha. Lovely.

Girlintheframe · 10/10/2026 14:32

I used to but they my hairline started receding and getting thinner. It’s cut much shorter now as when long all I did was tie it back.

Growlybear83 · 10/10/2026 14:56

Im 68 with waist length hair, and a Ive never tied it back since leaving school, apart from when I go swimming or sometimes if I’m gardening.

elperil · 10/10/2026 15:19

Oh and I tie mine back in a pony tail despite using hearing aids in both ears. I don't even think of trying to hide them, they are a godsend and I'm proud to show them off!

blacksax · 10/10/2026 15:29

I'm 64 and wear my hair like that near enough all the time, often twisted up in a scabby bun-like affair as well.

I absolutely could not give one single shiny toss what anyone else thinks.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/10/2026 15:30

Defo not just for the youth. Jennifer Lopez, etc, looks great with her pony tail. I think that Kim Kardashian does it a lot too. I keep meaning to give it a go.

RandomUsernameHere · 10/10/2026 15:32

Yes all the time! I hardly ever wear it down as it’s extremely long.

SnapAndTap · 10/10/2026 16:08

Fashionable or not, my hair is rarely not tied back. I really don't want it getting caught in rotating equipment, or dunked in beakers of chemicals!!
And once it's been tied up all week, it feels weird having it down at the weekends, so tied back it is!

Feasluin · 10/10/2026 16:14

I'm late 40s and have waist length hair. I wear my hair up almost all the time, and I have done for about 10 years. I like to tie it all in a ponytail, then clip the ponytail up. I'm more concerned about the practicality than whether the style is too young for me. I hate the feel of hair blowing around me or falling into food I'm preparing or eating.

borntobequiet · 10/10/2026 16:17

I’m 73 and wear my hair either down or in various types of buns and ponytails.

Anseranser · 10/10/2026 16:24

I had my hair cut pixie-short a couple of years ago, can't recommend it enough. It's so easy to look after and looks tidy all the time.

Pachycephalosaurus · 10/10/2026 16:30

I am 40 and I usually tie my hair up, but never ever in a slicked back style. I do ponytails, buns, claw clips, but I always try to get volume into the sides and top.

The slicked back style is just classic Miss Trunchbull. Some people with specific hairlines do look nice with a slicked back style, but these people still look even nicer with a bit of volume and less grease. It balances the face.

LagoLady · 10/10/2026 16:36

I’m early-mid 40s. My hair is usually shoulder length, and then once a year or so I cut it up to a shorter bob and let it grow again.
I hardly ever tie it up, it’s down 90% of the time, unless I’m walking ddog on a windy day.

I keep it freshly washed, blow dried and usually straightened

I never really thought about this until someone (younger colleague) at work brought it up once, and everyone agreed with her… they all thought it was extremely weird that I never have my hair up. They made a really big deal about it. And we don’t work in an environment where hair needs to be tied back Confused

HappyViewer · 10/10/2026 16:52

I started to do this in my early 40’s, then I said to myself if I’m going to have it tied up a lot I may as well have a shorter style. Singers what I did. I’m now late 50’s and have mid/longish hair which is down all the time apart from occasionally on holiday I’ll have it half up. For me letting it get a bit greasy and tying it back didn’t make me feel good.

NattyKnitter116 · 10/10/2026 16:54

its for whoever wants to wear their hair that way !
40+ is not old, honestly (rolls eyes)
a ponytail is a practical thing, it keeps your hair out of your eyes in the wind amongst other things.

just do what feels right for you and enjoy being young!

BugOnARugDrinkingTeaFromAMug · 10/10/2026 16:54

I'm 40 with hair between my shoulder blades and waist, I wear it all ways, down straight, down curly, low puby, high point, braids, clips.

I prefer it with the front pieces out though if I have it tied back, just to soften it a bit.

How on earth do you cope with waist length hair, washing it etc.? My hair was starting to reach waist length a few weeks ago and it was unbearably annoying. Back to just below my shoulders and still driving me mad 😅

NattyKnitter116 · 10/10/2026 16:58

Oh and to add, if you tie it really tight you get the Lorraine Chase effect (look it up) otherwise fondly known as a Croydon Facelift in my part of the south east. You need something more drastic than a scrunchie though if you want to achieve skin tightening :-)

Me too.

oddsbobshammerandtongs · 10/10/2026 17:04

No I wash mine so it doesn’t get greasy

HappyViewer · 10/10/2026 17:04

Has your hairline receded by having it up everyday?
