Kids own money

How do you handle this situation you take 2 kids too ice cream van to treat them both to a medium flake their 4 and 7. 7 year old wants a large i say no where all getting medium, 7 year old then says they will buy it with own money but now 4 year old wants large if 7 year old is having large. Im normally its your money you can spend it on what you want but i really didn't know what to do in this situation. I ended up saying no where all getting mediums.

I would say, you can’t have a medium AND and large because that’s a ridiculous amount of ice cream. Shut the question down. Then later talk to older one about not abusing their “own” money. They were given it. The rules are not to be mean and showing off.

It isn't fair you didn't let your son use his own money to buy the large, we should teach our children all ages that if we save/have money, and it's ours, it can be spent however we want x

icanfeelitallover · 10/10/2026 12:37

I’d just let them both have a large

No 7 year old kid needs a large ice cream as opposed to a medium no matter w who is paying - you're in charge just shut it down without further discussion.

brownbootsandhats · 10/10/2026 12:39

Tricky one

they have too much money I guess

perhaps let them chose what they do but make sure that there is a consequence for making unhealthy choices - no puddings for the week , no buscuits in their packed lunch ?

redskyAtNigh · 10/10/2026 12:41

DB and SIL have a "you can't spend your pocket money on food" rule which I guess you might consider.

Otherwise, if they want to spend their money on an icecream then up to them. If the 4 year old wants a large, they have to spend their money too. This isn't really a different problem to "7 year old wants to spend his money on a toy; 4 year old wants a toy too".

AmberTigerEyes · 10/10/2026 12:44

I think you did the right thing OP. It was your treat so for 7yo to want to buy a large with his own money means he misses out on the free medium ice cream. I too would have said no, I am buying us all mediums save your money for something else.

Betterversionofme · 10/10/2026 12:46

Kids spend their money however they want with exception of anything that is harmful.
They can't buy large ice-cream because you deem it harmful/too much. They can't buy giant bags of sweets because they eat all of it same day and that is harmful. They can buy large bag of sweets once, but if it's gone by evening, that option is gone.
You inform them how it's going work. You don't negotiate.
You revisit the concept when they understand how carbs are metabolised. That time they'll thank you.

Does the 4 year old get their own money as well?

APlagueOnBothYourHouses · 10/10/2026 13:03

I think your ‘we are all getting medium’ is fine.

Does the 4 year old get their own money as well?

The money is from the 7 year olds birthday recently

You’re the parent
your rules!

I would also say that. Those saying that kids can spend their money how they wish- that doesn't really work if they want to spend it on things that aren't good for them. The 7 year old really didn't need a massive ice cream.
