If you DON'T use/post your children on social media

How strict are you about organised groups doing it? Like the school website, sport team social media pages that sort of thing.

Thinking more those who are doing it from a personal preference perspective rather than any safeguarding concerns.

I don't use social media, and haven't posted photos of my kids online. However we're asked all the time whether we give permission for them to appear in photos with the groups and clubs they attend. School socials and website, rugby, gymnastics. Anything we join really.

When I was a kid it was so exciting to see your face in the paper with your team or group. Its obviously different with the ever lasting online presence of things, but still...not sure if maybe this is an area to be a bit more chilled about?! 🤔

I don’t post my children on social media and I don’t give school/nursery/clubs consent to do so either. I know it can feel a bit sad as you are proud of their achievements and maybe they would be excited seeing themselves but the reality is AI is on the rise, ppl with bad intentions will take and use images. Even if you think your only sharing with ppl you know the sad reality is someone you know has bad intentions and the risk increases hugely if you let school/clubs etc post them publicly.

Betterversionofme · 10/10/2026 12:20

I never gave consent. Still, my kid appeared in one photo on their website. I told them and they removed it within hours. That was 15 years ago.

Stablegeniuspig · 10/10/2026 12:21

I don’t automatically give the school permission to post pictures of my kids but they very rarely do publish any photos. We do have a school what’s app (decided against a FB page) and the teachers post pictures there (it’s a very small school and no one would use the photos themselves and all the parents make sure we ask each other before stuff is posted too). If they want to publish a picture of them online/in a publication, they ask in a case by case basis. I have the same worries as the poster above re AI. The odd photo in a group once in a blue moon doesn’t concern me especially as their faces can’t usually be fully seen.

I'm not bothered about things like school photos as they aren't individually identifiable. Whereas if I post on my social media everyone knows "this is redsky's DC". I don't use their names on social media either, for a similar reason.

cheezncrackers · 10/10/2026 12:48

I never post pictures of my DC on SM, but if they're in a school sports photo or something that's okay. They're not identified by name so I consider it fairly anonymous. Someone would have to actually be stalking us to identify the kids from random (and rare) school photos that get published.

stealthninjamum · 10/10/2026 12:50

In primary school I’d allow them to be online because I signed the consent form in reception and schools didn’t post as often as they do now. There were a couple of grainy pictures where you couldn’t really identify my children so it seemed harmless. When they went to secondary I let them choose and both chose to not be on social media even in a group photo.

pimplebum · 10/10/2026 12:52

My work place did a social media check on me so any presence from any age could be called into question

SummerBlueskies · 10/10/2026 13:00

I don’t post my DD on social media, my other kids are adults but DD is still in primary school. School rarely post any photos but like a pp said they don’t publish their name so wouldn’t be easily identifiable. The risks are too high these days unfortunately, I have a granddaughter and DS and DIL don’t post her on social media neither

TheAmberKoala · 10/10/2026 13:28

We opt out of all of these.

canklesmctacotits · 10/10/2026 13:39

I don’t post because I have no SM, and I always refuse consent. They still post, but I don’t know this because I don’t have SM! Other people send me screenshots. I don’t mind enough to make a big deal of it UNLESS name and photo are together. One or the other isn’t worth my time arguing.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 10/10/2026 13:41

I don't have her in any school or club photos.

cariadlet · 10/10/2026 14:02

Dd is a young adult now.

When she was young, I didn't post pictures of her on social media. Partly because, not having grown up with SM, it seemed a weird thing to do (I still don't post personal photos - nights out, holidays etc) and partly because I wanted to respect her privacy and let her choose what to post or not post when she was older.

I would have given permission for photos on the school website, Facebook and newsletters as long as they were group photos where she wasn't named.

WellyBellyBoo · 10/10/2026 14:03

I let them do general photos of sports etc. so long as their name isn't there.

Tightglassslippers · 10/10/2026 14:12

I don’t post photos of my kids to social media (I will post the back of their heads, or will very occasionally put up IG stories of their faces) but say no to any groups/school using their image. There was an incident recently where school sports day photos were lifted from a school website and used to create AI CSA material with these children’s images. It’s not a risk I’m willing to take.

Remmy123 · 10/10/2026 14:18

I'm not bothered about my kids being on school or sports websites for their football clubs - not sure what the issue is with that

DryIce · 10/10/2026 14:32

Don't post on social media, and don't give permissions for clubs etc to

Simonjt · 10/10/2026 15:52

Our sons hockey team can post him if he’s in his gear, because you can’t tell who it is. Our childrens schools don’t post any pictures of childrens faces anywhere.

readingmakesmehappy · 10/10/2026 15:56

Always tick the box on school forms saying I don’t want my children’s pictures online

An incident at your school?? That's horrendous!!
