How often do people say this to you?

Genuine question- when you meet someone new how often do they say they know your face or they recognise you from somewhere?

It genuinely happens me 9/10 times to the extent where I just thought it was something people said when they meet new people to be polite/make conversation. My partner today said how he’s heard it said a few times to me which sparked the conversation around it, he says it never happens him.

It happens to me quite often but then that's because I am involved in lots of things so I'm in lots of places and mixing with lots of people and also I have slightly unusual hair so I think if people see me they don't forget and would recognize me again as someone they have seen before.

Never happens to my husband but he's a home bird who doesn't go many places.

It does happen a fair bit, and I think it's just something people say to make conversation.

Yes it does. That’s my exact point, it happens stangely often

I get it quite a lot. Not 9 times out 10, but still fairly frequently. It's surprising because I've got quite unusual features.

Boopsi · 09/10/2026 20:10

I sometimes say it because I am rubbish at remembering names and faces and it is somewhat more polite than saying I don’t know who the person is! Luckily I have a good memory of what people have said to me, even if I can’t immediately recall them, so once I work out who they are, I can drop in some detail I remember and most people are touched I remembered some minor detail and I can cover up my face blindness!

Very occasionally. Every 25 people I meet maybe one would say that.

Quite often but we have lived in our smallish town for a long time and I get involved in all sorts of clubs, societies, volunteering, exercise classes etc so I cross paths with a lot of people. I say it too.

Frambo · 09/10/2026 20:26

I should add that I don’t think these people actually do recognise me from anywhere, I’m not massively social

I get that often - think I’ve got one of these faces. I have been accused of being Diana Rigg a number of times. Flattering, although she was about 20 years older than me.

It can be a blessing and a curse because in '86 I was arrested getting off a bus for stealing the day before in Wandsworth. I have never been to Wandsworth. It was the policeman's word against mine and no cctv back then. Yes there were fingerprints. Yes there were witnesses but it wasn't me. Anyway after 5 months the case was dropped due to lack of evidence and I blew a sigh of relief

I have one of those faces too. Once a lady absolutely insisted I sang in a choir with her in Southend. I really had to think about it because I do like choral singing and I did occasionally work in Southend at the time… but it wasn’t me!

Never but my best friend gets it quite a lot. I think some people have familiar faces. My NDN looks like a bit like Daisy May Cooper and there’s a teacher at the school my DC go to who looks just like her too. Some people have that sort of face.
