and only just realised what it means to my mum. They have talked about infrequently it in passing but don’t celebrate anniversaries s normally.

They live over 500 miles away in a rural area. My mum has gone along with my dad for 60 years and I think she’s given up ALOT.
They are fit, healthy and mentally well 80 year olds but have animals so won’t be able to go for a weekend break etc. My father hates eating out and they live too far to drive and 4 hours from an airport.

My mum has started talked about it and I can tell she’s really excited. They were going to do a big party for their 50th anniversary but changed their minds. Never mentioned their 60th until last week.I phoned this morning for the card from the King but it will arrive in 6 weeks. Ideas if anything I can do or send?

To be honest, anniversaries are for the couple. They should've sorted something out between them. Send flowers and a champagne hamper or something?

You can order and afternoon tea from m&s or the cornish company can deliver a cream tea. Flowers and a balloon from a local florist might be nice too.

I do this for all their birthdays though.

I understand about anniversaries being of no point to anyone else. However it’s my mums entire existence. Her whole life has been defined by my dad ( who is great) but it’s an achievement to still be a lovely human after 60 years of it.

Do you have a local newspaper or radio station that would be available to interview and photograph them - my late parents liked that sort of thing.

Oh that’s a good shout.
My mum went on dates wuth a few men in the 60’s that then went on to become quite famous. She was hot stuff in London and Bristol.
She married my dad and then spent her life miles from anywhere.

Are they techy? Could you do a video montage of messages from friends and family? X

We got ours an engraved sundial and plinth if that helps. Plus ordered a special cake.

They are. But goodness knows how I get friends and family to record in a few days.I don’t have access to half their friends numbers or addresses.

It theres is a bonkers story. They got married after meeting each other just 6 weeks earlier.

For my parents' 40th I arranged a party for them at their house, but it's a bit late for you to do that. Although maybe you and their immediate family could arrange to visit them and to have a little celebration with them?

I, with my sisters, invited all the family, their local friends and as many of the friends who were at their wedding as we could. My parents had a fairly big house so we held it there, but when I sent out the invitations I also sent a list of the local hotels and B&Bs so that everyone knew they were expected to find their own accommodation.

We just did a big buffet - all cold because we didn't want to mess up mum's kitchen, and got a nice cake. We got candle torches for the garden and brought extra garden seating with us. I think it went well - everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We had about 40 people there from 16 to 80 years old, so it wasn't a big knees-up, just a lovely gathering of their favourite people with plenty of food and drink and reminiscing.

Are you going to go and see them and get any siblings to do likewise? I would have thought that this would be the main thing.

EffortlessDiscussion · 10/10/2026 09:21

Mine didn’t want a big party and most of their same generation relatives are too frail or distant or both to have attended, so they had afternoon tea at a cafe for their local friends (they have outlived most so it was a fairly small group) and then we went out for a pub meal another day with them, me, DH and DCs, DB and DSIL, we don’t often all get together so that was nice. Card from the king, special cake at home after the pub meal.

Mine don’t do anniversaries normally either but did have parties for 40th and 50th, so we knew we would want to celebrate this one too which meant we were more prepared and made arrangements further ahead, is there any chance you could travel?

They live an eight hour drive away. It’s no different time wise to train or fly. Theres not enough time to get there and back really. I could throw a sickie but they would hate that. It’s also expensive.
All the family and friends live in this part of the country. Parents moved 15 years ago so they have friends but none that grew up with them.

Update!
There's a minor "celebrity ' that lives in a nearby town. I know them vaguely in a small way. I've asked if they will host my parents for an anniversary dinner. Said MC also has a lovely home which I know my parents will love to visit.
They said they would!
