Vitamins for over 40s

Hi ladies. I'm turning 42 at Christmas and really should be taking daily vitamins. Can anyone advise on the essential vitamins? I've looked at multivitamins but I'm unsure if they have high doses of what's needed. Any help would be much appreciated 👏 I'm 'tyring' to sort myself out before menopause hits 🤦‍♀️

Vitamin D: supports bone health as deficient due to low sunlight, also helps with modd and immune function, commonly recommended.

Calcium: helps in bone strength.

B12 & B6: energy, brain, red blood cell.

Omega 3: Heart, joints

Magnesium and Iron.

They all are good and highly recommended for over 40s.

If you have a healthy diet the only vitamin you need to take is vitamin d. You can overdose on some.

OneSharpTurtle · 09/10/2026 16:41

Everyone is different and can easily overload your system with vitamins that are not essential. You can rest some bloods to be done and get your diet right before introducing vitamins that can cause toxicity.
Other than that, collagen, B12, Iron, Omega 3,6,9, Zinc, magnesium are great. There are other alternatives understand what works for you and menopause is different for everyone especially managing hormonal imbalance.

I take magnesium as helps with the aches and pains and I get restless legs , collagen powder in my coffee and Health and Her perimenopause capsules too

Collagen is not a vitamin & is a waste of money, just eat enough protein. I'm not sure omegas, 3, 6 & 9 (also not vitamins) are anything other than hype either, but I may be wrong on that one (eat oily fish).
Most people won't need extra vitamins other than vitamin D. I'm in my 60s & that's the only one I take (when I remember!). If you have a healthy diet you should get everything you need.

Have a look on Chat GPT. You can tell it your age, concerns etc.
I am taking far too many vitamins and want to scale back.
I’m 41. I go to the gym and weight train. It told me to continue with:
Creatine
Collagen
Vitamin D
Omega 3
Magnesium

It told me to scrap:
Biotin
B12
Iron
Vitamin C (I’m going to continue with this though, as I’ve been taking it for years and very rarely get a cold. If I do, it’s mild and short lived).

There’s such a load of garbage peddled to folk. There’s no need for vitamins if you eat a varied diet and don’t have any malabsorption issues. Vit D is the only one that is beneficial due to our Northern latitude. If you must, take a cheap and cheerful multivitamin. Collagen is protein, just eat more protein if you’re being seduced down that route.

A spoonful of extra virgin olive oil daily and at the age of 76 I can still do the splits, put my legs behind my head and ride a bike until sunrise

Read the new Xand Van Tulleken book, you'll see supplements and vitamins in a very different way. They boil bits of donkeys to make collagen! Read the book.

Have you had any tests? A doctor told me that the old myth about a healthy diet gives you all you need shouldn't be believed by over 40s, as people often don't manage without some supplements. Some countries test people, and look into reasons for eg low iron before supplementing, but I don't think we do, unless you go with a specific problem eg heavy periods?

Bloody hell

I am 43 and I only take vit D and omegas in one capsule. Although I want to get iron panel done as I think I might be deficient - I drink loads of coffee and it reduces iron absorption x

PloddingAlong21 · 10/10/2026 14:17

Vitamin D and collagen.

I use Zooki for collagen - really good.

NormasArse · 10/10/2026 14:21

Does anyone take Astaxanthin? I suffer really badly with dry eyes (always have done), and I believe it helps?
