Have you got a floor cloth?

As in, an old flannel/dish cloth that had been demoted to mucky jobs? I just dont hear it anymore, though do indeed keep old dish cloths for this purpose.

Used for cleaning stuff off the floor (kitchen spills) wiping shoes over, anything that needs a wash/wipe but not with the dishcloth.

I have a floor cloth which I use when I have decided to mop all the floors. I don't use it to wipe shoes though, that would be weird. Have a bag of rags for that and throw it after. I also don't go and get it out if I spill something on the floor, I'll use a normal dishcloth to clean it immediately and put it for the wash afterwards.

No. Mop for floors, anything else kitchen roll or an old j cloth

We use sponges to wipe the counters etc and when they get old and yucky (every week ish) we throw the old one under the sink for mucky jobs. (And then I routinely throw the really old ones out).

Coconutter24 · 08/10/2026 21:32

No I just use kitchen roll and spray or antibacterial wipes

i have a small pile of rags; old dish cloths, cheap microfiber ones, old socks in the utility room where all my house cleaning supplies are kept.
my kitchen dish cloths and tea towels are for kitchen/dish use only.

I don't know if its an old fashioned thing, a northern thing or what. It was common to hear "get the floor cloth" or similar in my childhood.

Yes I keep an old towel for any floor spillage situations.

Ladidahdi · 08/10/2026 21:37

No. We use a scrubby sponge for counters and pots. And a tea towel for everything else, floor spills etc, wiping spills. I have a drawer of tea towels. My mum doesn’t understand as she uses kitchen roll, whereas I don’t understand her use of kitchen roll.

Yes, my northern mother always had a floor cloth. I’ve not really come across the term anywhere else.

It's not only northern. I'm from the south.

My childhood floorcloths had once been our cloth nappies. I have old face flannels.
