Why does DM react so badly to her Covid vaccine every year?

DM is 83 and pretty stoic. She is 4 years post chemo (non Hodgkins lymphoma) and 3 years post Long Covid. She’s also T2 diabetic and had a new hip 6 months ago. I don’t know if any of this is relevant.

She’s had every Covid vaccine offered, and always gets a fever, aches and shivers. Then she sleeps for 2 days and is fine. It’s predictable that she blocks out her diary for 3 days after her jab.

It’s not a live vaccine, so why does she always react so badly? I (hope) I’m not being deliberately thick.

It's working each time - her symptoms are her immune system springing into action exactly as it should.

But why does she have this reaction and others don’t? Is it not working for me then?

I stopped taking it, as it took me out for weeks at a time. I assume I just don’t have a good immune system or the ability to fight it.

I am 30 years younger than your DM and I react pretty much like she does almost every time. I now plan mine for a Friday so I don't need to take time off work.

Maybe you should do some research?

ShakyBake · 08/10/2026 22:04

Unpopular opinion I know but I think they are more trouble then they are worth and I regret getting the initial 2 years back and never felt quite the same since

LadyWiddiothethird · 08/10/2026 22:08

I started getting a reaction a couple of years ago.I had my Covid and flu vaccines this past Monday,so arranged to do nothing for the next 2 days and this time I had no reaction at all.

Absolutely worth getting the vaccines done, especially now,Covid is rife where I live once again.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/10/2026 22:15

If you have previously had COVID-19 or have already received a prior dose of the vaccine, your body already recognizes the spike protein. When you get a new shot, your immune system doesn't waste time figuring out what the threat is. Your "first responder" cells and pre-existing antibodies immediately sound a massive alarm.

I advise in several complex health groups (not specifically about vaccines but all kinds of things, I have rare autoimmune issues) and with your Mums combination of health issues it’s fairly common for someone to feel that way - we have the vast majority of those in the groups (14k ish members) feeling that way after the Covid jabs.

Octavia64 · 08/10/2026 22:20

I have this type of reaction to both covid and flu jabs and always have.

i have multiple health issues.

Imagine what the actual virus would do to you?

Smallestshadow · 08/10/2026 22:28

My healthy strong (then) 16 year old son got quite ill from the vaccine back in the Covid years - more ill than from when he actually had Covid. It also messed up my menstrual cycle quote severely. I would never have it again.

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 08/10/2026 22:30

A lady in my work is the same, she looks like death after she gets it (is immunocompromised, not old). One of the younger girls was asking why she gets it when it effects her so badly and while I’m all for vaccines I kind of feel the same, she crawls through the days and looks like she’s on deaths door

Covid is very unpredictable. You coukd have it to barying degrees in the same year, or year to year. Vaccination is the best protection.

I’ve had Covid at least 6 times. I gave up testing. Multiple vaccinations. I catch Covid with it and without it.

After the first vaccination I was in bed floored for a week, couldnt stand up, uncontrollable fever, period started and the blood loss was insane.

After each vaccination in the early years I was a MHRA yellow card for an adverse event (AE). I also noticed a massive decline in my fitness levels (measured through numerous fitness trackers) and I developed a frozen shoulder that I have had multiple surgeries on.

I have a background in pharma development. I am completely pro vaccine.

kerstina · 08/10/2026 23:23

I reacted really badly to my covid shots felt as bad as flu although only lasted about 24 hours . Others didn’t seem to suffer as much. I don’t have a bad reaction to flu jabs. A few years ago I developed an autoimmune condition not sure if high levels of CPR mean you have a bad reaction or if the covid vaccine itself encouraged high levels of inflammation.

I mean she’s immunocompromised so that’s why she gets it. So am I and I’m rough for a couple of days but it is what it is

Crispynoodle · 08/10/2026 23:32

I think I’m on my 8th primary Covid jag this year (I’m immunocompromised) I’ve only got Covid once and it felt like a bad cold

I did Google, if that is what you mean. The results are either AI dumbed-down or biomedical stuff I don’t fully understand.

So, I thought it might be worth asking the community of brilliant, intelligent and helpful women here. Over the years I have seen this community of MNers across a wide range of professions give information and advice, including myself to many house buyers concerned about subsidence, flood, landfills and geo-environmental hazards.

I’d love to know why I reacted so badly to the vaccine. Nothing else has ever come so close to making me feel that ill or done so much damage to my body.
