This is awful news...think 'you and yours' is very good and Open Country...😢

You and Yours presenter Winnifred Robinson

BBC to cut raft of Radio 4 programmes including You and Yours

The corporation said it would be investing in a new consumer programme, while announcing more cuts.

Id pay my TV license strain to the BBC for its radio 4 programs given a choice

MirrorSignal1 · 08/10/2026 12:47

You and yours is far and away the best and most comforting and practical show on R4. How could they do this?

BarChart · 08/10/2026 13:40

What is Winifred going to do!!
I love listening to her talk, and she is so empathetic with the callers. So sad it is going.

Every time you start a thread on here about the BBC all the idiots come out of the woodwork to complain about having to pay for it. This is all their fault. Unfortunately the majority are idiots now and so this is probably the beginning of the end for the BBC.

Those of us with a bit of intelligence who really appreciate it (esp R4) should enjoy it while it lasts...

Actually heartbroken at this news. I've listened to You & Yours for years and learned many useful and interesting things about issues that affect everyone. I think this is exactly the kind of program that the bbc should provide as part of its public service and would choose it over many others it offers (Archers excepted of course).

Portakalkedi · 08/10/2026 23:07

Hard to believe. You and Yours is the only thing I listen to on R4. Gave up Woman's Hour when Emma Barnett took over, gave up Today when Amol Rajan joined (followed by Emma Barnett, what a pair of smug gits). It's the only decent and useful program on there, and Winifred Robinson is a likeable host with what I imagine is a comparatively cheap format as listeners provide much of the content. I guess they'll lose even more listeners then

I agree and they are going to have to replace it with something, which can hardly be cheaper to make than you and yours. I just hope they don’t fill the slot with a repeat. It’s the time of day I listen to R4 the most, the run up to PM.

Lifewasapillow · 08/10/2026 23:14

I'm so sad about You & Yours. It's informative and comforting at the same time. I turn over from R1 for it.
Surely it's quite cheap to make?

SwedishEdith · 08/10/2026 23:18

I am really shocked about this. I wonder if they'll make more focused podcast type programmes like the ones Shari Vahl makes and fill the slot with them? Winifred Robinson produces some of those, I think.

She's nearly 69 now so she may just want to retire. But the romance fraud and the series about the bogus solicitor getting the properties of people going into care homes are really important issues.

Why are they idiots if they're complaining about having to pay for something that they don't want and aren't interested in? I enjoy plenty of the BBC's TV, radio and internet output, so I don't object to paying for it (albeit it is a very flawed and questionable organisation); but I can completely see how people who only ever watch non-BBC live TV are very reasonably annoyed at having to pay for it.

I wouldn't want to have to randomly pay Tesco for the privilege of being able to buy beans from Asda.

HorribleHisTories15 · 09/10/2026 02:33

I agree @Portakalkedi, Woman’s hour went downhill after Jane Garvey’s time. I can’t take the new presenters, and I’ve been listening since my A-levels (passively back then though to be honest).

If You and yours goes, then the only quality programs will be Money Box and Word of Mouth.
Amol Rajan puts me off everything he ever has to say ( and I’m a South Londoner born and bred fanx). On Points of View the other week the lovely Pauline Edwards was presenting, it was quality over quantity in one. It was a relief to hear her lovely accent and her valuable contribution. By heck the Beeb have been giving us some squalor of late!

wavingfuriously · 09/10/2026 12:06

Yes awful they're binning You and Yours, particularly good for the fraud stories and how to avoid it...surely fraud is increasing so we need more public awareness of this issue.
Really think a lot of work goes into that program...bad decision 🤔

Oh no! I sort of love/hate You and Yours - but more love than hate! It is my sound track to lunch when I am WFH - even if some of it can be a bit banal. Winifred is a lovely, considerate and skilled host who’s voice I will miss.

It is so cheap to make - surely they could find cuts elsewhere?? Rather depressed that they are keeping Start the Week which is insufferably smug!!

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 09/10/2026 12:28

Why is Amol taking over everything? Even the traitors got rid as soon as they could! Much rather they kept You and Yours than any of his smug shite.

senua · 09/10/2026 12:34

But Laurie Taylor's going has to be a good thing. I can't stand his self-absorption.

SwedishEdith · 12/10/2026 14:10

I'm happy to sign a petition but do we know what the plans are for that slot? Is it still consumer affairs focused but in a rejigged format?
