I hate lazy parents. So I just got a job, and one of the kids we look after kept getting put back in nappies even tho hes fully potty trained and can tell us when he needs to go. The mom yells at my coworker and now me for potty training him what the he'll is up with these kinda moms!?

Are you employed in a nursery ?
Firstly no one should be getting yelled at .
I’m surprised this mum was allowed to continue using the service if she verbally abused the staff .
The other thing is I’m surprised your coworker started toilet training without working in partnership with the parent.
Is the dislike of underwear the mum’s reason for reverting to nappies ?

This is the second time you've posted about this today! Why?

Yeah. The mom refuses to potty train, so my coworker did it, and the mom instilled a fear of the underwear; he keeps on saying mommy told me I am too little for underwear" 😑

You've just said that he IS potty-trained.

And "the mom instilled a fear of the underwear" is just nonsense.

When you're employed in any childcare setting, it's your job to work with the parents; it's not your job to make decisions against the parents' wishes.
Even if you think it's for the best and you think she's a lazy parent, she is still the parent.

KateBushAgain · 08/10/2026 16:25

Your organisation will have policies in place , you need to know and understand them .
Where is your line manager in all this ?
I know you’re new in the job but have you had training yet ?

KateBushAgain · 08/10/2026 17:14

Also keep this coworker at arm’s length , she’s bitchy and dishonest and will probably lose her job , you don’t want to be associated with that.
Look you’ve got off on the wrong foot and you don’t understand the policies or the concept of working in partnership but everyone has to learn , you’ll get the appropriate training and some actual experience and hopefully settle in to what can be a lovely rewarding career .
This colleague of yours is toxic , she doesn’t represent the standards or grasp the ethos of early years care.
You will look back at this and be horrified .

Did you post two threads about this? Because there is another one running that is weirdly similar.

The colleague that potty trained the child, was the mum told it was happening? Did she potty trained him by putting him in pants when mum sent him in nappies? What happens when the child asks to go to the toilet?

Sorry, I lost my old account, but no training yet, and my line manager has been advising me on what to do but really told me to destroy and stay out of all this but I do worry a lot for the children

Why did you lose your old account?

I made one because I was venting, and then I made another one in another chat because I wanted to see if I could help him in any way. Yes, my colleague just trained him and did not notify the mum. The mum is just sending him inappies, and whenever he needs to go, we just bring him to the potty

No clue :( Really stressed the last few days; probably just erased the password from my mind or something, and plus I just used a burner email, but now this account is on one of my main ones, so

Sunbringer · 09/10/2026 13:41

It’s not your job to raise the child and decide his parenting style. Your job is to care for the child as dictated by the parent.

OneLilacReader · 11/10/2026 20:46

This is such a tricky one and I really feel for you. As a mum of a 3.5 year old and a nursery worker myself I’ve seen a fair few potty training approaches. I don’t think there’s much you can do though to be honest other than comply with the parents wishes.

for context I’d say 70% of the 3 year olds in our nursery are still in nappies and a few 4s too so it’s not the end of the world as long as they sort it before he starts school.
