Sat here watching a random Stacey dooley on catch up (random catch up but my lovely darling other half is pretending to be napping to avoid washing up lol) and wondering… what random things make you different? Like something as simple as step parent or an unusual job? And do you enjoy/embrace it?

I find different lives fascinating..

Chatting to a young 20 something on holiday.. he was our server in the restaurant.. he was English, was fluent in the language and was out there with 1 parent who had a boat on anchor nearby (apparently not mega yacht but big enough to live on) and a dad in uk... all this aged TWENTY. Meanwhile it had taken me 4 months to save up for the holiday.

I look different to regular parents (alternative with multiple facial piercings and many tattoos, wear a lot of black make up on my eyes, also 5ft nothing). I have been mistaken for a “new sixth former” when DD started her first day in year 7. She moved to a different school in year 9 and the head teacher approached us both from behind asking “what time did you get in ladies”. I replied that I was a parent who had been in for a meeting.
I came in for another meeting last Friday, all went well and DD and I walked to the outer fence to leave where you have to be buzzed out, camera recording. A voice came over “Errrr do we know you’re leaving?” I said that I was taking my DD home and had signed her out. Long pause then they opened the gate. She is 14, I am 37 years old. I still get ID’ed for Ibuprofen.
I think it’s because people take one look at my face and height and judge from there. However if they had a look at the top of my head (visible as im
so short) they’d see the many grey strands in my hair. I do find it funny at least and always have my passport to hand. It does annoy me with DD’s school. Even the bloody sign in screen is positioned high so it only ever takes a photo from my forehead upwards and can’t be adjusted.

I have an American accent. I’m English but lived there in childhood. I’ve never had an American passport. I’ve been in Europe for most of the last 40 years but my accent remains. This has led people to make assumptions about me and my character which is usually amusing but can be annoying and hurtful.
I had my children in my 40s.
I have type 1 diabetes.
I was widowed at 47.
