Ended up at out of hours this evening as I had had some kind of viral infection last few days, turns out I had some crackles in lungs (I was starting to feel more breathless hence I called 111) taken first dose of antibiotics but coughing more and more currently which is really starting to hurt, I have woken everyone up too ☹️ anyone to keep me company, while I can’t sleep?

Anyone about?

When I get a chest infection it hurts, presumably as the lining of the lung gets inflamed. But if the pain ramps up so that you can’t cough or take a deep breath, you may need more than oral antibiotics. I hope there is someone with you. I’ve only needed hospitalising once, but that was the first one.

Thank you! I’m asthmatic and have repaired heart condition, I did tell her it was hurting when I was breathing and coughing but she didn’t seem worried! My observations were mainly okay

my husband has shown no care other than dropping me off for the appointment, I am currently sitting upright in the lounge, but still coughing lots and I’m also very teary.

Anyone awake still? I’m struggling, I’m coughing every 3-5 mins and just feeling rough but can’t sleep because of it!

You need to call 111 again.
Please don't mess around with asthma.

2026onwardsandup · 07/10/2026 03:40

Please call 111 again . Hope you got sorted out x

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 07/10/2026 04:00

Please bypass 111 as it’s a long wait and inappropriate for what you need- please call an ambulance as it sounds like you need oxygen/nebulisers- it’s always a low threshold for hospital admission when treating someone with asthma and a chest infection in the community. Hope you are feeling better OP

Thanks all, I have called 111 and awaiting a call back

Asthmatic with lots of chest infections and hospital admissions. Do you have a SATs monitor to check your own 02 saturation levels? Sounds like your obs were done at out of hours GP, but worth keeping an eye on them. Sometimes just seeing ‘good’ numbers can help me feel less anxious and therefore calmer even if I feel rubbish with the infection. Keep taking all your medication. Assume if your asthmatic you’re on inhalers etc. - do you have a plan whereby you can increase doses etc in a situation like this? If so follow it, I take maximum of everything but know when to go into hospital for oxygen and nebulisers. Did out of hours prescribe Prednisolone as well as antibiotics? I usually see small improvements in 12 hours from starting oral steroids and antibiotics.

The early hours of the morning, when it’s dark and everyone else is a sleep are always the worst when I feel like this. Make a hot drink if you can, and call 111/999 and wake your husband if you’re getting worse.

thanks for the comment, still here awake! No sats monitor, this is my 5th chest infection this year but by far feels worse, yes I have a asthma plan and following, it’s more the coughing right now, it’s every 3-5 mins wheezy to the point of nearly being sick, I had a asthma attack at work 2 weeks ago and had steroids, so the doctor tonight only gave me antibiotics because of that.

You have my sympathy. Chest infections suck. I get them a lot because I also have asthma and low immune system due to having Rheumatoid arthritis and the meds I'm on. Hope you feel better soon xx
