Skin Care Routine

Hi I’ve posted this here as I wasn’t sure where else to put it. So basically I never use skin creams ever so certainly don’t have a skin care routine. The only times I do use them are for medical issues. Now according to social media, television and other media this makes me a complete oddity and it would make you think I’m the only woman who doesn’t use skin creams ever and moisturiser.

I am asking because I’d like to know if I really am that odd out or it’s just the media exaggerating. I don’t have any women I can ask in real life. I’m 52 if that is relevant. I’d also point out that I don’t care about what society says I should be doing and am happy with the situation and not looking to change. I’m just genuinely curious.

I think it is unusual, yes. What about SPF?

A skincare routine - even a very simple one - involves cleansing and some sort of product to restore balance after washing. What do you use to wash your face? I assume you don’t wear makeup up?

It's not really what society says, it's what the marketing folks say. They want your pennies!

I don’t wear makeup ever. I just use water to wash my face. I probably wouldn’t bother with sun protection cream as I never sit outside anyway.

At the end of the day, it’s your choice how you choose to look after yourself and no one else’s business what you do or don’t put into your skin. I’m curious as to what has prompted you to ask for opinions on the subject though? Has someone passed comment?

Pibs101 · 07/10/2026 03:13

I’m genuinely not worried about what people think about it. It’s more I was interested in finding out if I am unusual in my lack of skin care and use of moisturiser. I think maybe I am and that is okay.

You say you just use water on your face. Is this 365 days of the year? Do you never have a day when you feel bit ‘grubby’ and want to give your face/neck a good clean with something more than water? I’d say that would be the time for some serum/moisturiser?

No not really. And if I did I would use shower gel to give it a good clean. I hate the feel of the cream especially moisturiser on my skin. It’s also the main reason I don’t wear makeup I hate the texture. Soap is good enough.

I think most skincare is a marketing rip off tbh. My grandmother used soap and water and cold cream, my mum used soap and water and a basic moisturiser. Different sides of the family. Both spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun, both had amazing skin when they died in their 100's and 90's. Genetics has a lot to do with it.

Consequently I don't spend much time on skincare either. My face gets washed when I shower, and I put on a moisturiser with included spf. That's it! I am 60 now and my skin is not dry at all, and I agree, I don't like they feel of cream on my face either, it's always sticky. I currently use CeraVe with spf, but will ditch that soon as the spf makes it heavy and move to Body shop basic vitamin e cream.

I’m also not a fan of the mark hype surrounding skincare. However does your face not feel really dry after using shower gel on it? Almost like it needs a good drink?

As a previous poster said, a bit of cold cream is wonderful. Worked perfectly well for generations before we were sold the idea we needed to apply at least 10 different lotions to our face. The marketing teams must be having a field day!
