Proper toffee

Someone has recently bought me a box of quality street which is very kind of them.
I've just eaten a toffee penny. When did they get soft? They used to be proper hard toffees.

So I decided I wanted proper toffee as a Christmas present from family. What I really want is a box of Thorntons special, treacle and Brazil nut toffee.

Short of time travelling back to 1984, what is the best toffee I can get these days to recreate the Christmases of my childhood?

They were definitely hard. Haven’t had one for 30 years.

I want a huge box of Thorntons chocolate covered toffee please.

Alternatively I can make toffee with the added bonus of unpredictable levels of hardness, from gloop your mouth together to stick of rock hard.

Is it not temperature dependent? Usually they are eaten in the winter at Christmas so it would be harder.

That's a fair point although my house isn't particularly warm at the moment. It's not t-shirt warm inside but it is over 16 because the heating hasn't kicked in.

@LadyGardenersQuestionTime you may have the solution. The teens can make me some toffee. That'll save them money too 'cos the ingredients will come out of the pantry and anything missing will get added to my shopping list!

Walkers toffee, the kind that comes as a big slab with a little silver hammer.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 05/10/2026 15:46

Careful, though. I pulled a filling out with a hard toffee a few years ago. You don't want a dentists bill for the sake of a toffee. 🦷😁

Lomonald · 05/10/2026 15:50

Google Mrs Tillys, their toffee is Toffee, it is a Scottish brand I don't know where you are but you could probably buy it online.

Yes the Penny toffee used to be hard

@Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake

That's how we got our wobbly teeth out when we were small - we were handed a piece of toffee and shortly after - tooth.

Unless we swallowed it. Which meant tears because of tooth fairy cash loss.

Crinkle77 · 05/10/2026 18:18

You're not wrong OP and there's loads of other sweets that have been ruined in this way. Blackjack, fruit salads, bon bons. Even jelly sweets like jelly tots, fruit pastilles, haribo ststrawberries are all soft and gooey compared to how they used to be.

Arran2024 · 05/10/2026 18:32

You can still get Thorntons toffee. I found shops recently in both Carmarthen and Ludow selling the chocolate covered toffee. But my go to these days is M&S toffee - in bags by the other sweets. They are similar texture to the Thorntons.

RaraRachael · 05/10/2026 18:33

Can you still get Thorntons toffee? Since they closed all their shops, all I can get are big boxes of continental chocolates in Tesco etc.

I loved the toffee and the chocolate covered stuff even more even though they once took out a filling!

Ophy83 · 05/10/2026 19:05

My grandad always used to get me Walkers toffee. I miss him. Might have to get some toffee.

No you can definitely get it. They have on line ordering and there are shops around which stock it.

RaraRachael · 05/10/2026 21:03

Thanks @Arran2024 I'll have a look for it.

I used to love toffee as a kid, never liked the normal sweets. Highland toffee bars, toffee lollys and some weird flavoured toffees in a tube. I'd be afraid for my teeth these days though!

Toffos were flavoured!

Sunbringer · 05/10/2026 23:06

Omg that was my exact favourite toffee OP!

RaraRachael · 05/10/2026 23:14

@swapsiclesI used to give my kids a bar of Highland toffee if they had a loose tooth - guaranteed removal!
