Is anyone familiar with metal detectors?

My 17 year old wants one for Christmas. The prices I've seen range from £18 to over £8,000! I'm not sure how much I would need to spend to get a decent one. I don't want to spend a huge amount as it's only for a bit of fun, I want to get a basic but reasonably good one. Any ideas? I'm completely clueless about this!

I have fun with my £50 one from Amazon. My first find? A wine bottle top!
