Does anyone else feel overwhelmed by bills despite a decent income?

Is it just me or is the whole situation with money and bills just crazy now.

I am a single parent earning 4000 per month take home ( decent I know).

I was paid last week and I now have £1000 left until 26th October so pretty much 3 weeks. Out of this I need to buy food and any other discretionary spends etc.

I know that I have some money left and that I should be grateful - I am. It just seems crazy that 75% of my income literally evaporates. Admittedly this month is a little harder as I had some one off things to pay, however I rarely have more than £1500 left after all bills etc.

Does anyone else feel that same?

We would need to see a breakdown, to see if you can cut back on anything…..

It depends how you manage to spend £3k a month on bills alone?

Interestingnamesuggestion · 04/10/2026 20:51

Not wanting to belittle your stress but £300 per week for food and petrol seems doable. It's a lot more than we usually have left. It is hard though.

Could easily be done if they have a large mortgage and childcare?

Justaquestionplease · 04/10/2026 20:54

4k take home is decent...i assume you have a fairly high mortgage or rent?

Yep. That's why I said it depends.

My mortgage is £1500 which is obvously a big chunk of it. Other bills come to around £500. I also had to pay a chunk of sons school trips this month plus a klarna bill of £200. It just feels worrying that I only have £1000 left

Yes we do 😭

bingocard · 04/10/2026 21:03

Same position OP I've just had to decline a school trip because I can't afford it !!!

You aren’t wrong but will be likely told you are bad with your money/overstretched yourself.

You probably earn 70k ish which is the equivalent to 53k 5 years ago

A lot have no choice due to when they were born

Quitelikeit · 04/10/2026 21:10

Yes op it’s worrying isn’t it

I wonder what the state of affairs will be in another 5 years

arlequin · 04/10/2026 21:10

Our bills are £5000/month 😧

GreenEyesMillennial · 04/10/2026 21:12

We have a high mortgage, both earn well. Whats killing me at the moment is the cost of the food shop!! Eating fresh veg and fruits seem a luxury right now and i do grow a lot myself during summer time

Bjorkdidit · 04/10/2026 21:14

Are you not getting maintenance from DCs father? That's a lot of your issue, running a household with quite a big mortgage on one salary. Your income isn't much more than two people earning NMW.
