How do you prevent emotional burnout when supporting others?

Not going into details, but dh and I are the only ones providing emotional support to two relations. It's a shit show of a situation that has meant one is excluded from their family and neither has anyone else to talk to outsidethe family. They aren't talking, there's huge bitterness and anger. But thats their problem to sort, we are just there to be a sounding board, to listen. There's no question of not doing it. But, we saw them yesterday and God, it was emotionally draining. Hours of circular monologues, anger, blame, denial, recriminations. We have months potentially of this. Im worried about us both. I can see compassion fatigue setting in.(i already cannot give a shite about what happens to one of them, im there for DH and the second person.) What can we do to lessen the pressure and toll?

Direct them to some form of talking therapy, if you are their only sounding board its going to be very draining on you.
