I need to dry a polycotton cardi overnight - tips?

Any tips? I’ve been ill and got behind on the washing. DD is going on school camp tomorrow and I told her yesterday to give me all her washing that couldn’t go in the dryer. It was silly of me to assume that she knew what could and couldn’t…

She’ll survive either way but she’s got her heart set on taking it. I washed it (only just realised I should have aired it) and am now wondering what to do.

It’s 22.5 in the sitting room, too warm to put the heating on but IMO not warm enough to dry it overnight.

I do have a good hairdryer but that would surely take hours?

Please help!

For a dehumidifier? Or an airing cupboard?

Arlanymor · 04/10/2026 19:31

Airing cupboard or could you hang it outside if rain isn't forecast?

Wrap it up in a towel and hug it/roll it about for a while. That will help to remove some of the water.

Then airing cupboard/heated airer.

If you don’t have one of those, put the heating on for half an hour and open all the windows

Put the heating on for an hour.

Put it on a hanger in a doorway overnight pref with good air flow -open window and then hair dryer in the morning

Hang on a hanger and suspend from the bannisters! I find things dry really quickly over the bannister. Make sure there are a couple of upstairs windows open to get a through draught.

Thanks all - I ended up putting the heating on. It felt ridiculous but the cardigan is almost dry.

DD is a bit nervous about camp and tends to get upset about relatively small things when she’s stressed, hence my fussing about something fairly unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

It would almost certainly have been fine in the dryer.

It would almost certainly have been fine in the dryer.

It’s 50% cotton, there’s a fair chance it would have shrunk. I wasn’t willing to chance it.

Spin twice, or thrice in washing machine to reduce drying time?
