Should I tell work about a booked weekend away now?

I need to get some advice.

My partner booked a weekend away for us for next weekend. It was a last minute thing about 2 weeks ago he booked it. I meant to tell the office but I never got a chance to do it. Basically flying late Friday night and coming back Monday night.

I know if I was to tell the office now I will be scolded. Big time for not giving more notice.

My hours on a Friday is usually 1 to about 8 or 9 or 10. I could go in earlier and try and finish earlier but I know if I go into work at all, there isn't a hope in hell they will let me off early. It's not going to happen. We would really have to be on the road by 6.30 for a long drive to the airport.

So what do I do. Do I notify the office tomorrow or will I lie and maybe pretend to be sick next Friday and Monday or will I lie again and say I have a funeral to go to up the country. Maybe someone of my partners family or something or another. Just a lie.

My originally contract never included weekend work by the way so I should be in the clesr for sat and sun

If its likely you might have a sun tan then dont tell them you're off sick.

WiseMoose · 04/10/2026 18:10

So you want Friday and Monday off work ?

id have cleared it with work before committing to a trip away

Personally I’d now ask for the time off - explain it was a surprise.

but I I don’t like to lie- I wouldn’t enjoy my trip

JustWalnut · 04/10/2026 18:11

I would phone in sick. It's just work.

CheeseWisely · 04/10/2026 18:11

Isn’t it customary to check you can have the leave before booking the trip? That aside, if you were one of my team I’d be 100x less pissed off if you asked for leave short notice than if you lied about.

NormasArse · 04/10/2026 18:11

Get your husband to ring and say he’s booked it as a surprise for you.

PinkFrogss · 04/10/2026 18:12

Is this a surprise from DP? If so I’d be fuming with him.

I think you need to try and sort it out with work, too big a risk otherwise and you won’t enjoy it if you’re worrying.

Bweave · 04/10/2026 18:13

I didn't book anything or have any say. It was a surprise.

If you can’t sort it out with work then DP is just going to have to suck it up and take the loss if he’s not able to reorganise or get a refund.

TheSmallAssassin · 04/10/2026 18:14

Why don't you just ask to book the time off as leave?

Bweave · 04/10/2026 18:15

I could still work on friday but if I know if I go near work I won't get out on time. Or maybe they may surprise me and let me go early. All I really need is monday off

Ring in sick. If you tell them now they will probably deny your time off and then you can't phone in sick after that.
Life is too short, go enjoy yourself.

Missing the point of the thread but why do people use literally when it's literally not going to happen?

What kind of job is this? I would just let them "scold you", water off a duck's back, take the leave and enjoy your trip.

He’s a bit of a twat to do that without knowing you could get the time off.

So what will I say - last minute surprise gift from my partner

Where on earth do you work ?

your employers can’t scold you for wanting to take leave. They can deny it though if it doesn’t fit in with staffing levels

amylou8 · 04/10/2026 18:23

Well if you ask for it and they say no you're screwed. So your only option really is to call in sick. But only if you're totally sure you won't get found out. Otherwise you'll have to risk asking and cancel if they say no.

Seems like you’ve made your mind up that you’re going to go and lie about it. Fair enough OP but on your head be it.

If you’re the “queen of sickies” work may well be onto you already.

It would be genuine sickness though with a lot of migraines. I don't usually take sickies to get on a plane and go away.

Is your job something you can catch up on or are the specific hours important as they need a certain number of people on hand?

I did notify the couple I help already and they said it's fine. I just didn't run it through the office yet.
