Do pillows need weekly pillow case changes if not slept on?

Is this grubby or not?

I have six pillows on my bed three each side. The ones on top have a pillow protector which gets changed each week with the rest of the bed sheets, I don't change the other pillowcases every week though because they don't get slept on. Am I being mucky?

I do the the same. I wash the bottom ones every 3 weeks.

I think that’s a bit grim… I wash all my bedding regardless

Most weeks I ONLY wash the top pillow cases nothing else at all. We are clean people - our bed is more like 2-3weeks which is probably outrageous on here. Life is way too short for weekly laundering of every bed.

Thelonelyshrew · 03/10/2026 10:15

No not grim at all!

LateNightOne · 03/10/2026 10:17

No.

People really need to calm down the incessant washing of stuff that has just not even been used.

FirmSnake · 03/10/2026 10:19

Why would they need washing if they aren"t being used?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 03/10/2026 10:19

If they've been under your head (3 stacked) then yes I would wash all three. If they've only been next to you, for display purposes only [ahem 😉], then those dont need washing

elperil · 03/10/2026 10:19

On this site, if you don't dismantle the bed itself and throw in the machine along with every stitch of bedding every day you are minging. 😊

It's absolutely fine to do that, why wouldn't it be? I do the same.

I also have a top sheet which means I only change the duvet cover when I feel up to it ha ha.

OneTicklishPoster · 03/10/2026 10:22

I thought you meant on guest beds with no guests!

My pillows get spread out into a little nest so, yes, I wash all pillow cases. Probably would anyway even if I slept on them in a pile. It's not many extra things to wash so why not

mondaytosunday · 03/10/2026 10:40

Goodness no. I don’t wash my sheets every week anyway, though pillowcases do get washed more often than the rest. I sleep alone, I wear a nightdress, the pillow is basically the only thing my hair and skin are touching. People get obsessed.

NeverLooksFlippingClean · 04/10/2026 20:12

I would wash them but it's your bed and your washing pile so🤷‍♀️
They are hardly at the stage where they are likely to walk themselves to the washing machine.....
