Gas Safety Check - how long?!!

We're long-term renters and have just had the guy out to do our yearly gas safely check. We have a gas hob and boiler.
He was here for a grand total of 6 minutes before leaving. Paperwork always goes direct to LL and I was sorting out around the house when he left, with the words "All done."
But how can it all be checked sufficiently in 6 minutes?!!

Same here 7mins door to door! Supposed to run if due 10mins to check the flu?

FizzingAda · 02/10/2026 14:05

!?!?!? Our gas boiler was checked and service yesterday from our usual firm, the engineer was here for an hour, so I don't see how six minutes would cut it. We have it done annually, and that's about how long it takes, whoever the engineer is.

FluentTealGuide · 02/10/2026 14:08

Did you see what they did? They have equipment that makes it a lot quicker these days, but 6 minutes is ridiculous. Even if they were doing just the boiler it would still take longer than that.

FunPartyIdeas · 02/10/2026 14:12

@FluentTealGuide I heard him "checking" the hob and think he looked at the boiler, but 6 mins?!!
I have ensured I have decent carbon monoxide alarms about and I've installed quality smoke detectors in nearly all of our rooms but still seems dodgy...

Your landlord is required to give you a copy of the certificate.

I own my home but still get a yearly gas check and it's always way longer than six minutes. I wonder if they're doing a very basic quick check for a lower price

Iliketulips · 02/10/2026 14:22

Admittedly, it's a full check and boiler service, but our chap tends to be here 30 mins, takeaway front off, runs water and then heating, checking for co2 emissions andother readings, empties a little tank, tops pressure up, last time he had to repair a seal as it was deteriorating and could have caused a co2 spill.

I'd hope a gas inspection would include takings readings and an internal check for deterioration and leaks which might not be evident depending on how boxed in a boiler is.

Thanks all. Is it worth me letting the landlady know he was literally here 6 mins?

Always been 5-10 mins for me. If you want a service then it’s longer. Been told boiler is in excellent condition so it doesn’t need to take long

FunPartyIdeas · 02/10/2026 14:42

@labourisnowdivisive Not sure how long boilers are meant to last, but we've been here 5 years now...

When we just had a safety check done by British Gas it was only about 5 minutes.

Our plumber now does a boiler safety check plus service and that takes about half an hour.

labourisnowdivisive · 02/10/2026 16:36

@FunPartyIdeasours is about 10 years old now! He’s a regular engineer that comes each year. I trust him and always have a chat too. He said not to waste my money on a service as boiler is immaculate….
