Did Queen Elizabeth II conquer the hearts of the Irish upon her 2011 state visit as a marker of Anglo-Irish reconciliation?

Can’t speak for everyone but no, she didn’t conquer my heart. I respected her for coming and for shaking hands with Martin McGuinness though.

What do you mean by "conquer the hearts"? It's not a common phrase in Ireland.

Porkydorky · 02/10/2026 12:25

I don’t think so. I think there was respect for her and the nature of her visit, but people were more interested in witnessing a historical event rather than loving her and all that she stood for. The word “conquer” might perhaps not be the one you were looking for OP?

What a weird question. No, I very much doubt she "conquered the hearts" of anyone in Ireland. Why would she?

TheBoolahBus · 02/10/2026 12:27

Why , essay?

Are you the poster who keeps posting about the relationship between UK and Australia?

Have you just moved onto Ireland now?

BigGra · 02/10/2026 12:30

Good Lord , no. 😂

Porkydorky · 02/10/2026 12:36

And as to your specific question - it would be unusual for all of the inhabitants of any country to think or feel the same about any specific event. The wording of the question is limiting and also a little patronising OP.

You might want to rethink that word conquer!!!!

We respected her for shaking martin mcguinness hand

I remember Dara O'brien's take. He listed a few historical events, where Britain shit on Ireland. Then he said, "Then she turned up in a green dress, and all is forgiven".

sammylady37 · 02/10/2026 12:56

No, absolutely not.

Hopeitsokaytomorrow · 02/10/2026 15:36

She was very welcome and the visit went well. Bit of excitement and widely reported. The effort was appreciated.

I couldn't care less, then or now, about any royal family . To me they are the same as anyone else . Just super privileged .

MadamWhippy · 02/10/2026 16:06

No. Just a another visit from a head of state.

I think "conquer hearts " is a tad overblown.
