Today I was driving upon approaching a roundabout I looked right and then left and then proceeded to go. I didn’t see the cat at all.

upon continuing I have hit a cat, it was deceased I picked the cat up and took it to the vet.

i am besides myself with upset about the sadness I’ve caused a family and possibly with children.

The cat was air tagged so I couldn’t see any address to take cat too.

i drove home and had to get my partner to go to the vet with me I am besides myself

I am not sure how to move past this, I know the cars family will feel so much more sadness than I ever will.

any advice?

Oh love. You did more than most. Cats are buggers for darting in front of cars, and so many people would just have left it. You did a kind thing after a horrible accident. Be gentle with yourself.

Feel better knowing you cared enough to stop. And took it to a vet. Losing a dcat and never knowing what happened to it is worse ime..

Boreded · 01/10/2026 16:09

You did the right thing, unfortunately most don’t.

Some poor family will be heartbroken, but it was an accident and you really have done all you could

I just want to say Well done you for taking it to the vet! I know it must feel awful, there's no getting around that, but at least the owners will have a chance of knowing what happened to it instead of always wondering...

I see other people have come to say the same thing. 🤗

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/10/2026 16:10

I'm so sorry - what an awful thing to happen.
It was very kind of you to take the cat to the vet's.

NewGoldFox · 01/10/2026 16:10

When my cat got hit by a car I was so sad to think whoever hit him just left him there alone. You were really kind to take the cat to the vets, cars are an unavoidable risk to outdoor cats. Sending an internet hug as I can imagine it must’ve been an awful shock.

Ipsevenenabibas · 01/10/2026 16:10

It was a complete accident that could have happened to anybody. You did a kind thing to take it to the vets. Be gentle with yourself.

Medicalgrademusic · 01/10/2026 16:10

If it helps, as a cat owner I'd be incredibly grateful you stopped and took the cat to the vet. This is the risk we take when we let our cats out. If anyone would be to blame for my cat being hit by a car it would be me for choosing to give them that freedom, not the driver.

I actually hit my own cat once when I reversed into the drive and she darted out. She was ok luckily but I felt terrible even though it wasn't my fault.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 01/10/2026 16:11

You did the right thing. I have a cat and I’d be very grateful you’d taken him to the vets in this situation. Cats love to be outside and unfortunately as outdoor cat owners this is the risk we take.

Craftysue · 01/10/2026 16:11

At least you cared enough to get it to the vets so the owners know what's happened. Unfortunately that's one of the risks if you have an outside cat.
It's sad but accidents do happen

Yiayoula · 01/10/2026 16:11

As a lifelong cat owner ( aka slave ) I want to thank you so much for what you did, it can’t have been pleasant and so many people would not even have stopped , let alone take the cat to the vet.
Bless you for your compassion . 😘🐈‍⬛ xx

Glesgalass · 01/10/2026 16:29

As a cat owner whose cat enjoys roaming around it’s a risk we take. If my cat got hit by a car I’d like to think the person who hit him would be as compassionate as you.

NancyThompson · 01/10/2026 16:41

What you did, taking the cat to the vet, will really comfort its owners. That was kind and decent of you. Please be kind to yourself, it was a total accident.

longtompot · 01/10/2026 16:46

@lovelymamx By taking the cat to the vets you have prevented a family wondering where there cat is when it doesn't come home, and they will also be told the cat wasn't left there alone after being hit 💐 I think the not knowing along side the loss is makes this sort of thing even harder to bear

Nincompoo · 01/10/2026 16:49

I ran over and killed a neighbours cat, didn’t even see it, same as you. Stopped when I heard the bump and took it to the vet but it had to be put to sleep. I felt the same, it’s awful. A few years later someone run over my cat and left her to die in the road, thankfully my neighbour saw it happen and she died in my arms.

Cats are both super clever and thick as shit at the same time. They get themselves in stupid positions. Cats are outside creatures who deserve to live their lives to the full but allowing them that as their owner means you have to accept some level of risk.

Dont beat yourself up about it too much. It isn’t like you did it on purpose.

Smallestshadow · 01/10/2026 16:49

Aw OP, I say this as a cat owner, you have done nothing wrong & have nothing to feel bad for. It was an unfortunate accident and it wasn’t your fault. You did absolutely the right thing taking it to the vets- a lot of people just leave them.

Neuronimo · 01/10/2026 18:47

You did a lovely thing, it will bring comfort to the family to know what has happened to it. It seems to happen such a lot here, cats can be so sudden and unpredictable. I lost a beautiful six month old kitten in my teens and nobody even knocked the door.
