Why can't I keep my trousers up?

I've never been able to keep trousers up around my waist! I buy mid-rise ones that are supposed to sit around my stomach but they just migrate down and sit on my hips underneath my c section pooch however they did that even before I had a c section. While I'm walking, I have to pull them up every 5 minutes but when I sit down I find them incredibly uncomfortable to be sitting around my stomach so I pull them down around my hips again. I don't want tighter trousers or a belt because then I wouldn't be able to pull them down to sit, or they'd be even more uncomfortable around my stomach. But I don't want low rise trousers because then my arse crack would be out when I bend down. I feel like other people have mid rise trousers on and they stay where they are supposed to. Is it something unique about my body shape that my trousers fall down? Or are other people just more tolerant of tight trousers around their stomachs and are even happy to have that while sitting?

They're too small. Buy bigger trousers and use a belt.

gerispringer · 01/10/2026 06:48

What happens to elasticated waists? Joggers etc? Do they stay up?

SnapAndTap · 01/10/2026 06:49

I need a higher rise, so they actually sit above my hip bone, and stay up.

Mid rise sits at my widest point - trousers fall down, and skirts rise up.

They stay up for longer but still slip down eventually.

Huh? Why would being looser help them stay up?

I suspect you have a high waist as well. I never buy mid rise as they don’t fit my body well.

Trousers that are too small will ride down because they're going to move to the smaller part of you, ie downward.

likelysuspect · 01/10/2026 07:03

Its like when you buy a tight top or tshirt and its too small over the stomach and it rides up.

ScottBakula · 01/10/2026 07:09

Wear braces, they a much more comfortable than a belt.

IronEverything · 01/10/2026 07:13

You can buy an elasticated belt. But your trousers obviously don't fit you properly.

What's your waist measurement?

MyThreeWords · 01/10/2026 07:17

Because trousers that are too small get too stretched around the hips and thighs, which forces them downwards to where the legs get narrower.

I’m apple shaped - fairly slim, with a small bum and hips and my tummy sticks out a bit. I also have this problem with jeans (I don’t wear other trousers) that if they fit me standing up they cut me in half when I sit down. I don’t have enough hip width to wear jeans looser around the waist or they’ll start slipping down when I run for the bus!
I found wide legged jeans made a big difference being loose around the crotch so when I sit down the waist can rise up a bit to where my body is narrower, like skirts do. And I now have a pair that also have a bit of elastic at the back so are 100% comfortable! Only problem is that I want to buy something similar now and haven’t managed to find it. I need to do some serious research before this pair wears out.

Maybe post a picture of you ( from the neck down ) with the trousers on so we can see the fit

Okay that's not the problem here. They feel very loose around my stomach when I'm standing up and they fall down because they're loose. But they feel very tight around my stomach when I sit down.

I'm the same because I have hardly any waist to hip ratio. Elasticated waists are the answer.

backformoreofthesame · 01/10/2026 08:40

Possibly sitting posture

KayFabe · 01/10/2026 08:42

Dungarees are the way! Do you have narrow hips OP? I do, and trousers don't have anything to keep them in place.

user293948849167 · 01/10/2026 12:04

I prefer a higher rise preferably with an elasticated waist.
I’m pear shaped so anything else slips down or is too big at the waist.
Mid rise is the worst style for me.

mumof1or2 · 02/10/2026 21:36

This used to happen to me too. I think some body shapes just don’t suit mid rise jeans. I always buy high waisted jeans and trousers now and they’re SO much more comfortable and don’t fall down. I used to feel so self conscious of what was hanging out when my trousers slipped down - I’m much more confident in high waisted.

Haven't read the full OP but, based on the title alone, I'd guess a high libido and lack of moral fortitude.

this is where grade 7 home ec (sewing) come in handy.
yes it will have to do with your body shape; maybe a long rise, high waist, or simply flat bottom.
then based on your body type you need to shop around and be willing to have some stuff tailored to fit you.
you might like the look of certain jeans but they might be totally the wrong cut for you.
btw; men with high rises, zero waist, and flat bottoms either get the waist band insanely tight to sit just above the hip bones or wear belts.

Same here, I'm almost cuboid! High waists and elastane have saved my trouser game.

Thinking about it, I had the sliding trouser problem before I got fat round the middle. All women's jeans & trousers were mid or low rise and I aced the visible thong look every time I bent or sat down 😬 Couldn't wear skinny jeans as they literally fell off. I think it must be some deadly combination of a long torso, slim hips and needing more room in the crotch!

Get high-waisted, wide or barrel leg jeans with some stretch, OP. Or try trousers with waist pleats, at least they've got something to give.

All my jeans are at least 2% Lycra/elastane, they just don't work otherwise. Lycra AND wide legs AND high waist works best.

I always wish I could do this, answer the question without the context. I see the titles and get really hopeful, then when I click and read it is pure disappointment

marriednotdead · 03/10/2026 04:17

I used to have this problem too, I’m slim hipped but with a tummy. Consistently find that best fitting jeans and trousers for me are higher waisted from M&S.
