Can anyone who has bought either a Toniebox or a Yoto story player tell me what you think of it?

We have a Yoto and it’s brilliant. We got to when my son was 4 and he’s nearly 8 and still loves it. Quite a few of his friends have them too and really like them.

Another vote for the yoto mini

Soontobe60 · 30/09/2026 20:38

sounds good - are the cards durable and is it easy to buy a range of them?

We have both and both are great. Broadly I’d say Tonie box for younger children and Yoto for over 5s BUT the tonies and cards aren’t cheap. So if you’re going for one or the other the Yoto is probably better. I am fond of the Tonie box though.

I have both.
A Tonies box for my now 4 year old (got it when he was 1) and a yoto for my almost 7 year old (maybe had it for 3 years).
love both but can see pros and cons for both.

what age is your child?

We like the Yoto. I deliberately chose it because it uses cards not figurines, so much easier to store and less temptation to mess around with it. We got it ages ago so I can’t remember the exact research, but I remember thinking it would be suitable for longer than the Toniebox would have been. My son really loves the Yoto podcast as well.

We have a mini for the car/travel and a normal one for home. The cards are durable and there’s a good range of stories you can pick. When he was small, there were lots of good classic picture book based cards. Now he’s 5, he’s moving on to longer stories and chapter books and he’s still happy with the variety.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with both!
some stories we have in Tonie, yoto and book form… which is ridiculous!

No … not if they enjoy it.

My DD will play for ages with the Tonie characters, so that’s a win! I do think the Tonie box is easier for toddlers.

We have a 5yo LO and have a yoyo.
A friend also has a 5yo and a tonie.

Personally I think the yoto is the better choice. The cards are like bank cards so pretty durable. We’ve had ours 2 years and they’re survived fine so far and the range is pretty good for this age and older, plus you get sleep sounds, Yoto radio and podcasts on the app.

My friend loves her tonie (got hers around 2 years ago too) but is saying she thinks her dd will outgrow it soon.
Plus when our dc are together they play with the tonie figures like toys and I think she’s lost a couple that way.

We have a yoto and DS1 still likes to listen to audio books to get to sleep at 10. There's a good selection for older kids - documentaries, Harry Potter, captain underpants etc.

The only 'issue' is that the cards are less readily available than the tonies figures.

We have both too, ours are adult operated as my 6 year has profound disabilities and can't use the players for himself. If I had to chose I would opt for a Yoto as the cards store on my phone and I can play them if we don't have the physical Yoto player with us (we have the mini as it's easy to carry when away from home), the ability to play the cards without the player has been invaluable when stuck in traffic, at hospital appointments, during unexpected hospital admissions etc. I can play the Yoto cards through my car stereo system easily too, Unlike the Tonie I can also play them through his player from my phone which saves me having to go into his room at night to swap characters. We use the sleep radio feature of the Yoto every night too.

Snap, my son is 9 and still uses the yoto.

We love our Yoto mini, ds4 listens to it every night to fall asleep too, and pops it on sometimes in the daytime too whilst he plays. I prefer the idea of cards as I wouldn’t want him messing around with the figures too much and breaking them/losing them.
Also find the Yoto mini perfect for travel or even in the car, and I like I can turn it down or off from my phone in a different room if needed.

It’s for my great nephew who’s turning 3.

What's the youngest age you'd start them with? Thanks for the thread @Soontobe60 ! I've been pondering this exact question.

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 30/09/2026 20:57

Yoto mini
They won't grow out of it so quickly and it's easy to take around

2manyEnergyDrinks · 30/09/2026 21:08

my ds has had his Yoto since he was 3 and it’s sturdy, durable and they will most likely grow out of it less quickly.
one negative though is the cards can be pricey, even second hand (but Im sure the Toni box is the same)
