I am having the worst migraine of my life - please help

I’ve suffered from migraines for a number of years. Normally a sumatriptan and a couple of ibuprofen get rid of it.

Well since last night my head has been throbbing / pounding SO much. I cannot describe you to the pain. Nothing is helping. Absolutely nothing.

I was so violently sick at around 9.30pm and then again at about 5.30am. I can’t sleep because the pain is so bad. I’ve thought about calling 111. Do I just need to ride this out?

First things first - are you sure it's a migraine?

MrsPapillon · 30/09/2026 08:41

Three disolvable aspirin with a coffee or Coke, plus a pint of water. After an hour take your usual painkillers (ibuprofen/paracetamol/cocodamol). You can also take a Triptan.

This is the migraine pathway of my NHS Trust and it’s worked well. If it doesn’t go off after that call 111. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

As a lifelong migraine sufferer, if I had a headache that was as bad as this and my normal medication wasn't touching it, then I would definitely call 111.

You have my sympathy as I'm a fellow sufferer and have been known to throw up from the pain. In this instance if a triptan and pain relief haven't worked it may be a good idea to call 111.

For what it's worth I find a combination of sumatriptan, paracetamol and ibuprofen with a hot water bottle on my head helps. Make sure you have a full stomach. Also a super hot shower on my head. Hope you feel better soon.

Dispersible aspirin works for me but usually moreso if I catch it early. Is it definitely a migraine?

BinfortheWin · 30/09/2026 08:47

You need to be seen by a doctor.

Hope you’re feeling better soon 💐

Maddy70 · 30/09/2026 08:48

Obviously if it's unusual you should get checked out.

Try putting your feet into very cold water for 5 mins and repeat. It honestly works

Please call 111 or go to your local walk in centre, not worth the risk if this isn't a migraine xx

DontyMon · 30/09/2026 08:50

I don't have them so much anymore, but migraine would frequently have me throwing up and in so much pain. Worse than giving birth imo!
I found a cold gel pack to the throbbing part was really effective- buy at least two so that you can always keep one in the fridge. I hate to say this, but screens are really crap for it- The light is terrible for you- so I'd turn off your phone.
I had some success with brown noise too (though pink noise is better for some)- There are free playlists on spotify and YouTube. I had it loud, in earphones, but see how it feels for you.

You should not be taking medical advice from people on the internet. You need to speak to a health care professional this morning

AgathaA · 30/09/2026 08:54

Migraines always make me vomit because the pain is beyond reach. A bad attack will mean there is no way I could move my body to pick up my phone and unlock it unless I was ready to drag myself to a place where I could immediately vomit - the light and thought required to type would make me instantly sick.

To me this is a completely normal migraine attack.

Chockachip · 30/09/2026 08:55

Worst headache of your life needs assessment by a doctor, always. Please get seen.

But normal for you is not necessarily normal for this person and thats what should be considered. I am sorry you suffer with migraines so bad but for someone else suffering these symptoms it may not be a migraine and should be checked.

OP I would call 111 for advice, its always worth checking if your pain is outside of the norm, and your worst headache ever is a symptom that usually flags as needing checking. You can go through the 111 check online first if thats easier.

Coming to say what everyone else is. Please don't ride it out go to A & E and explain what is different from usual.

You can't take ibuprofen with aspirin!

I think you should seek medical advice - this is not normal for you and your usual pain management isn't working. You need to make sure nothing else is going on.

stripesandspotsanddots · 30/09/2026 09:13

Agree it's worth calling 111. In the meantime, I find something cold helps me with these really awful migraines - e.g. a small bag of frozen peas that you can press to the area of pain.

But the OP isn't you! I really wish Mumsnet would monitor these batshit crazy responses to medical issues. It's so potentially dangerous.

Franpie · 30/09/2026 09:16

I had a migraine like this a couple of years ago. My normal meds weren’t doing anything. After 3 days DH called 111 and they sent a paramedic out on a bike followed by an ambulance to take me to hospital.

I was fine in the end after the super strong med they gave me in hospital but everyone told me off for leaving it 3 days to call for help.

You can't take ibuprofen with aspirin!

My apologies, that’s what I was told by the migraine nurse. I can’t take ibuprofen anyway so I use paracetamol.

WildlyInappropriate · 30/09/2026 09:34

I usually find that my migraine headaches disappear as soon as I vomit, so in your shoes I’d be off to A&E.

If this is the worse you’ve had and not responding to your usual meds, you need to be seen to rule out anything worse. Good luck.
