How would you move on from this?

I’m late 20s and hoping to hear from people more experienced than I am. I have a friend who I went to school with, we were quite close and I miss her. I’d say is she is a pretty poor friend to me now, but in my head I still remember us being really close. So I’m probably looking at the friendship with rose tinted glasses, as opposed to what it is now, and I feel conflicted about what to do.

We used to be close and speak everyday day, go on holiday together, spend time with each other’s family etc but essentially our friendship has now turned into me constantly paying for her on the rare occasions I do see her, and her ignoring my messages about everyday life and her only contacting me if she needs something. I live in a touristy area in England for example, and she’ll message me if she wants to stay over with no payment bc she doesn’t want to pay for a hotel.

She shows no interest in my life otherwise and any conversation we have revolves around issues she has at work / in her relationship in the sense of her saying she has bigger problems than I do. For example if I say things are busy at work, she’ll say it can’t be that bad as she’s a nurse and saving lives etc so she has it worse and gets back pain from handling patients etc so why am I complaining. it gets a bit one sided like that. i feel like she constantly compares herself to me in that sense. She’s never happy for me either even though I’m always there for her & celebrate her successes.

so I’m in a weird place now where up until now, I’d have probably have thought she was a friend but now I probably don’t see her that way. But I don’t know whether to send her a message or just fade her out.

It doesn't seem like this friendship brings anything positive to your life.

You absolutely don't have to stay friends just because you have known each other a long time and were once close.

It would appear that you have grown apart as people.

Would you miss her if you never saw her again? Does the thought of not having her in your life make you feel sad or relieved?

If its the latter then begin to faze her out. Stop making the effort and stop sending the daily 'chat' messages. If she never really makes an effort anyway then eventually you will just fade out of each others lives, IF that is what you want.

If she only messages you when she needs something, just say no to whatever she needs and she'll end the friendship for you. No need to do anything.

I do miss her but I miss our old friendship from a few years ago vs what it’s turned into now. I wouldn’t miss her if she wasn’t in my life, as she’s already not in my life if that makes sense. She just makes an appearance when she wants something sort of thing

Yeah you’re right, she does have this habit of always poppping back up on whatever social media platform / WhatsApp though so I find I can’t really get rid of her. by the time she messages me I’d have forgotten our last exchange and so the cycle continues, but yeah I guess it’s time to ignore her.

I wouldn't necessarily ignore her, just say no to requests for favours. If she's asking after you, then that's fine, right? That's what you want? If she doesn't and it's only favours then you know what she's really like.

In this situation I would 'drop the rope' don't be the one to reach out first, stand back a bit and see what unfolds...in this case it will probably be when she needs something from you, I'd make a polite excuse and decline a few times...I think she'll fade out if your life when she realises you aren't of use to her anymore. Some people are like that they are friendship vampires, she'll be that way with all her friendships.
Just try remember the friendship when it was good and move on, not all friendships are meant to last forever.

Thanks all.

it’s getting me down a bit as I recently bought a new house/moved, also have a new job that I’m doing well in etc and she hasn’t even messaged congratulations. She wanted the link to my house listing to see the photos when I found it, but that’s the only engagement I had from her. She later said she would come over on moving day / after I moved but it’s been radio silence lol. I find that a bit rude as regardless of being busy it only takes a second to send a message, just a bit weird having friends ghost you after milestones like that! As I wouldn’t do the same to her.
